Rick Pitino back in the Big East
    6 year deal with St. John's ..

Can you believe it was 1978 when he was Div 1 coach with Boston University
Has not been in Big East since 1987 with Providence.

He is 70 and will be 76 if he serves 6 years

Meanwhile Ed Cooley takes the Georgetown job - no surprise.

It would be really nice to see Georgetown get back (Born and raised there) although they can leave that thug crap behind.

Would be great to see St. Johns back in the mix as well.

But, No disrespect to U Conn Nasher. Great program. So solid.

            I loved Mullin's teams.

Just saw Louie in an interview.
Little Louie is 98, and he's still got it all going on.
            98!

              Louie !!! Good for him.

Never forget when he ran that out of bounds play on the throw in really late in the game. It set up winning the game. One of the true legends.

Wow. Back in the day of the seriously BIG EAST.

He was in the Big East for many years with Louisville, but not the same as the 1980s heyday. Pitino had run-in with most of the coaches back then, like John Thompson and Rollie Massimino, even though he was only there for 2 years.

For his second year, there is a story he was not on speaking terms with Thompson and Massimino, so when they had the pre-season coaches meeting/golf outing, Dave Gavitt put them all in the same foursome. Gavitt was brilliant, too bad he never wrote a book on the first 10 years of the Big East.

To old to coach, he must need money. Punk college kids these days won't respect the old man.

                    Gavitt was the Big East
                    He was a god.

We went to many tourney's at MSG
Back when UConn sucked, to watch BC, the good Pitt teams, 'Nova, 'Cuse...

                    My favorite Big East moment?
                    This one of course.

The greatest ankle breaking, step back buzzer beater I've ever seen.

Mine was Jerome Lane's dunk. Just a normal Monday in the Big East, overmatched Providence team (first year without Pitino, BTW) and yet everyone was still wathcing nationwide/

Slew I can imagine Pitino rubbing other coaches the wrong way. Rick was the celebrity type personality.
Do you recall when he wrote that book. It's like he was going to be a inspirational speaker. Those were big business then.
Motivational speakers and books. TV infomercials. I was looking at the data and even forgot that Rick was assistant coach for the Knicks before he coached PC. I wasn't much into basketball in the 80s compared to hockey. So I forgot he went back to the Knicks as head coach before the Celtics. He's done it all.. He was HC of BU before there Gavitt created the BE. One of my friends used to hang with Marvin Barnes. If he didn't get addicted he was going to be an NBA star.
I actually think St Johns is the perfect fit for Pitino ... even though he is old, he is good shape and he'll strut those sidelines at the MSG dressed to the nines. He's going to elevate that program. 6 years is a lot to work with. He will have a chance to create the rosters he wants. Players will go there that previously would go elsewhere.
What do you think of Cooley at Georgetown now? I say no big loss. I think he's somewhat overrated but is certainly deserving of the job and was the best PC coach since early 90s. Anyway PC needs a coach now..
Do you think any of the 3 BE teams in the Sweet 16 right now can win it all? Have to write off Xavier.. it would be UConn or Creighton.
