Wentz is a #25-48 rated QB. Every team wants a top 24 QB as its starter. Any team without a top 24 QB has their choice of the FAs in the 25-48 group based on scheme fit, cost, distraction baggage...or they can draft/develop/chase someone else. Top teams with a top QB issue, (injury risk/holdout etc), will be interested if the price is right. Wentz can still perform, but no-one wants him at $9M and Wentz isn't willing to sign for $2.5M + incentives. Most likely he'll remain unsigned until after Week 1, when veteran contracts become guaranteed, and then he'll be an option when a starting QB gets hurt.

His early August situation is what I thought it would be in early January.

But how does that make him bad? We've been expecting Kyler to die since he entered the league. Young makes good decisions, not every qb stands there and welcomes a beating like Cousins and Big Ben.

Howell is a product of a team that has been starving for a qb for decades. He would have that job had he been in Chicago also ( obviously they wouldn't have Fields in that scenario ).

Several awful qb situations were filled in with rookies this year but Wentz may very well still exceed the quality of play of guys like Stroud, Mayfield ( almost definitely ), Ridder, Tannehill, and Love. When a bum like Josh Johnson ends up playing meaningful time due to qb injuries in an NFCC game, a guy like Wentz will always have a job.
