High school basketball coaches charged with murder in death of basketball player

Full Title: High school basketball coaches charged with murder in death of basketball player who collapsed at practice

A grand jury has charged two coaches with murder and child cruelty in connection to the death of a Georgia high school basketball player. Imani Bell, 16, suffered a heat stroke while practicing outdoors in nearly 100-degree weather in 2019, according to her family's attorney.

The article lacks some important detail about the charges. Is this first degree or second degree murder or manslaughter?

I could see involuntary manslaughter here potentially, but not murder. I really doubt the coaches intended for her to die. They were just negligent and reckless, which is manslaughter.

But I'm sure this type of thing happens every day, just doesn't usually result in death. Coaches beware.

            .
That was my first thought too and I was thinking maybe the "murder" was just click bait, but per another source:

A Clayton County grand jury recently returned an indictment charging Larosa Maria Walker-Asekere and Dwight Broom Palmer with second-degree murder, second-degree child cruelty, involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

Second-degree is an overcharge to get a plea. They'll end up pleading guilty to something, serving a very little bit of time, and never be around children again.

As we learned in Minny recently, your intentions are irrelevant when it comes to murder now. All that matters is the color of the victim and the color of the perp.

If it's the same color it's no big deal, if they're both white it's no big deal, but if it's black v white it's murder and intent or job or training or precedence be damned.

Depends on the charges. If memory serves, Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder. So yeah, intent didn't matter there. It matters only if it's one of the elements of the charge.

                      True

But the female cop that shot dead the black during a traffic stop this May isn't facing half those charges

...and remember 20 years ago Denny Green ran Kory Stringer to death at Vikings camp. No charges.

It's a tough one, but pro football is going to be different than high school sports. It's really hard to even opine on without all the facts. There's probably more to the story. The chilling effect is concerning though. If I'm a high school coach it would definitely have me worried. They need to have written protocols approved and in place and then follow them. If you do that, you should be OK even if something bad happens.

Georgia. Early1960s. Played HS football for coach's that worked us in 100degree heat. No water to drink. They thought going without water made you tough, got you in shape. AC was just becoming commonplace in the south. We were used to the heat. But it was hell. --late 60, early 70s they started giving boys water to drink. After a few dropped dead.
