#56Jerry Jones isn’t about to let the veteran coach go in the first year of his contract. That does make this moment different from what took place a decade ago.
But that just means the Cowboys owner has fewer options available to him now to shake this team out of its lethargy.
McCarthy isn’t going anywhere. Neither is coordinator Mike Nolan, who presides over a defense that’s on pace to shatter the franchise record for most points allowed in a season.
"That hasn’t crossed my mind,'' McCarthy said when asked if he understood why reporters were asking about Nolan’s job security. "I’m focused on getting better each and every day.
"That’s where we are.''
Defense isn’t the only issue. The Cowboys offense has put only 13 points on the board in the two games without Prescott. It’s been suggested McCarthy take over the play calling, a responsibility most were surprised he gave up when coming to Dallas.
Two points: Kellen Moore has done nothing to have those duties taken away from him. And if you were head coach, would you decide to call plays when a seventh round pick from James Madison will likely make the first start of his rookie season behind this offensive line?
Thanks for being honest.
"We understand the disappointment outside of the building,'' McCarthy said Monday afternoon. "We’re clearly worthy of the criticism. We’ve got to make sure we stay on point, stay on target and not react and try to change up a bunch of things just to change.
"That’s not my nature. I’m a big believer in the process and that’s going to be the approach.''
Change at this point is largely limited to lineup changes — the ones that haven’t already been forced by injuries — and players returning from the injured list. The trade deadline is next Tuesday. That remains a possibility.
But at this stage the Cowboys should be put in the category of sellers, not buyers. Think about it. Would you rather have another high-priced veteran or a draft pick?
Improvement must come from within. It must come from attitude and execution.
"Well, we need both,'' McCarthy said. "As far as which is the priority, I think attitude and style of play is the primary focus.
"When your style of play is correct, your execution will benefit most from that as opposed to execution without the proper style of play.''
The Cowboys have had other disappointing seasons. Optimism wasn’t flowing when the team lost 12 of its final 14 games to close out the ’15 season. But for now, what unfolded 10 years ago is the closest parallel.
And what happened after that dark, dreary evening in Green Bay? The Cowboys went 5-3 in the second half.
If this group somehow manages to win five more games, it should win the NFC East.
Going away.Comment -

Dallas is a mess.
To make matters worse, they are seriously considering giving Dak 40+ mil a year....Comment
