Virginia will more strictly enforce the use of masks in public and the practice of social distancing starting today, Gov. Ralph Northam said in a press conference this afternoon.
Northam threatened business owners and patrons who disregard CDC guidelines, saying from now on it's "No shirt, no shoes, no mask, no service."
Along with stricter enforcement of the rules, alcohol sales will soon be cut off earlier in the evening.
"These enforcement actions are here to stop people clearly flouting the rules," Northam said. "You are being selfish and hurting everyone who is doing the right thing to beat this virus."
This move is "not political," Northam said. It's purely a public health issue.
"It will take everyone working together," Northam said. "We have to be vigilant and continue doing the things we know work... if we want our kids to go back to school this fall, if we want to return to normal life."
