During a speech to a Waseca Lions club in 1978, he said he decided to make the move “when I found out you only had 15,000 blacks here,” the Minneapolis Tribune reported at the time.

That does sound a bit racist at face value. Is there a larger quote within some sort of economic context?

Is it one of those times they selectively snip the quote out of a larger quote to make it sound more shocking?

Here's the larger quote. I'm not sure why he wouldn't have said it in a room with black people in it.

They talk about us moving to New Orleans, but what's wrong with that is ..."At that point, Griffith interrupted himself, lowered his voice and asked if there were any blacks around. After he looked around the room and assured himself that his audience was white, Griffith resumed his answer.
"I'll tell you why we came to Minnesota," he said. "It was when I found out you only had 15,000 blacks here. Black people don't go to ball games, but they'll fill up a rassling ring and put up such a chant it'll scare you to death. It's unbelievable. We came here because you've got good, hard-working, white people here."

Damn can you imagine if New Orleans had had a baseball team the past 50 years instead?

Washington Monument and all locations with his name attached ( parks, streets, cities/towns, museums, schools, etc.) on the horizon for removal? Nation's capital could be renamed? This crap just keeps rolling along and the "green light" is given to appease rather than resist. The continuance of pro sports is more important to a large segment of Americans than the dismantling of culture in this country, which is currently occurring.
