Anyone who remembers the Bay Area World Series in 89 remembers there was significant damage in Santa Cruz, Oakland and SF, and that was a 6.9

63 ppl died, 4000 injured and it caused billions in damage

In less developed countries, 6.1 can be catastrophic.

One mans disaster is another mans treasure.

All those cracked foundations in the apartment buildings in Northridge, California were repaired, those reg tags came off and those apartment building were re-rented right back up in no time.. Banks were giving those vacated red tagged properties away at the time. Foreclosed on and bank retained vacant properties for those that don't understand what I'm saying.. Banks wanted to clear the books at the time.

A 6.9 is about 16 times stronger than a 6.1

Each increase of 1, represents roughly a 33 increase in power. It's exponential not linear. I'm not a geologist though so I could be off. Either way, 6.9 to 6.1 is no comparison.

Point remains, a 6.1 in Costa Rica can be devestating. A 6.1 recently killed 16 ppl in the Philippines. Anyone that says an earthquakes gotta be an 8.5 to be considered newsworthy is a schmuck
