My first bet ever was at the nearby Santa Fe Downs.

They only run on Fair days. Hit a longshot at 13 to one. I was hooked.

My grandfather made his money back in WW2 hauling gas/oil to Los Alamos during the the nuke testing.

He later was man of the year in Espanola and quite successful. Tons of family still in NM.

Now, Espanola quite the shit hole, but worth a visit. Right between Santa FE and Taos. That is a nice road trip.

My cousin still runs a restaurant in Espanola, The Dandy Burger. Highly recommended.
