His wife was at home dying of cancer and this guy is out coaching a crappy Spurs team???

Why not not take time off to be with your wife?

it wasnt cancer, was a respiratory illness that she had for quite a while its very likely and possible that she wasnt expected to pass so soon and that is why he kept coaching, no need to judge pop

    Why can't we judge pop?

He is a public figure. He is fair game. I feel bad for him obviously to lose his wife.

Relax fella. I thought it was cancer because that’s what I read. No big deal. It’s not like I’m on ESPN giving my opinion.

He did a great job this year no doubt. I wouldn't be coaching if I were him after what happened.

Bashing Pop because he elects to work after his wife died.... doesn't make him less of a man.

I was always raised to work hard.... that's what was taught in my family... you mourn in different ways. You show love in different ways.

I worked on the day my mom died... I worked on the day my dad died. It's just what it is...

As far as I can tell, POP was not married to a war criminal, and didnt raise a 2nd war criminal, and didnt shit on the poor every chance he got.

Pop sitting for game 3, taking some time.

I feel for the guy and hope this doesn't lead to a downturn in his health. At that age, the loss of a longtime spouse can be devastating.

I don't think Pop overstayed coaching, he understood the value of hard work and how American raised players don't usually have the ethic. He understood many secrets to connecting with players and getting the most out of them.

That said, he may retire soon. He deserves a Hall of Fame spot for sure.

It is a good time to retire. He could continue his trailblazing ways and hand the reigns to Becky Hammon, giving the NBA their first female head coach.

Pop always had a good coaching system and talent to support it and I thinks that's why he's hung around.. The talent is vanishing quickly now and he should retire... Even his great system of coaching won't bail him out of this aging roster...

I'd set sail off into the sunset if I were him.. Although it's good to stay busy when a loved one dies, it keeps your mind off it.. Sitting at home and sulking with nothing to do after a death in the family is not fun or healthy.....

And why does Becky Hammon deserve it?

There's a reason Messina is coaching game 3. He enjoyed great success in Europe. He's been Pop's top man for years.

Hammon played in the WNBA. She coached the Spurs to the Vegas SL championship (all 2 weeks of it). Not much of a resume realistically.

I have no opinion on who is qualified or deserves to be the next coach. They are just pawns in a bigger game and not as relevant to market beating betting as many think.

I'm just not sure of where else in the NBA there would even be the chance of a woman head coach.

I don't care either way, it was more a nod to the stable institution that is Popp's and the Spurs. They bring players and coaches up and use them well.

Coach K is 71 and building a dynasty of 1 and dones. 70 is nowhere old. My grandfather beat my cousin in a 50 yard dash when he was 91. I shit you not. He grew up on a farm and climbed a pecan tree the day he died at 96.
