The Giants are in rebuilding mode...they are old with not much talent in the organization.
The Padres can offer him opportunity to pitch/play the field as well as less pressure compared to other cities as well as a stocked farm system that should be bearing fruit the next few years.

Decent humble ballplayer as represented in the 60 minutes piece last summer.
Was supposed to go to Dodgers right out of high school but couldn't refuse the Ham.
At age 22 he had no drivers license or auto, no agent.
He doesn't spend any of the millions and lives in the team dorm.
Looks like he would be a great fit in the National League with pitchers batting.
