#73And that's saying something. Petty, Don Felder (Eagles), Steven Stills (CSNY) all Gainesville guys ... also all of the original Heartbreakers were Gainesville natives.
Petty and his band sold about 200 records on a local label and decided they were ready for the big time, so they got in a van drove to LA. As it happens, they did land a major label. Usually they would have just said Tom and whoever you write with make the cut and we'll provide drummer, keys, etc. but all of the guys more than held their own. Cambell (guitar) and Tench (keys) are especially talented.
I highly recommend watching the Petty documentary on Netflix. I liked it so much I got Petty: The Biography, by Warren Zanes. I liked that even better. Petty is an interesting guy, talented, driven, not even that likable (just aloof, not a bad guy), but if you get his story you'll get why he is completely respected by legends of rock. Dylan & George Harrison loved and admired the guy and they and Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne all considered Petty basically the leader of the Wilberrys. (Orbison was the most adored.) Stevie Nicks seriously tried to join the Heartbreakers (and leave Fleetwood Mac) - all Petty would say to that was 'but you're a girl'.
Boss lyricist, too. No wasted words, pure Petty.

#96We lost a great down to earth guy. Loved to listen to his stories on sat radio.
What a great line;

#98Tom Petty was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Caught Tom and the Heartbreakers numerous times, most recently with Joe Walsh. Dude always brought great opening acts with him like Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, and a host of other classic rockers. He and the Heartbreakers were even Bob Dylan's backing tour band for a run of shows back in the day. Incredible talent, really gonna miss him.
Thanks for all the great music Tom.Comment -

#99Guy was a legend. His body had a lot of miles on it. Pretty bad coke and heroin problem back in the day and was a heavy chain smoker.Comment -

#104I saw an interview with Tom Petty once where he told a great story about how his High School Art teacher was trying to talk him out of trying to become a musician and instead he should try to do something more conventional as a career. So, basically his High School art teacher was trying to talk him out of trying to become an artist. So glad he didn't listen to that fool!Comment -

#105The Last DJ. Great album, straight shot at greedy music execs. Excellent all around musician/songwriter. Sucks.
