While “The Process” has been trusted in Philadelphia, with the 76ers managing to accrue young, talented players as they look to rebuild, there have also been a host of injuries for the franchise to deal with. Saturday night one of the team’s new additions, first overall pick Markelle Fultz, left Philadelphia’s summer league game against Golden State with a left ankle injury.
Fultz attempted to block a Jabari Brown layup attempt from behind, but he stepped on the back of Brown’s foot and rolled his ankle. Fultz stayed down for a couple minutes before being helped off of the Thomas & Mack Center court, and he was unable to put any weight on the foot. According to ESPN, Fultz has been diagnosed with a sprained left ankle.
As noted above injuries have been a big part of the rebuilding process for Philadelphia. Center Joel Embiid, selected in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft, missed his first two seasons with foot injuries before making his debut in 2016-17. Embiid was dominant at times as a rookie, but he only played in 31 games before being shut down for the season with a knee injury.
And last year’s top overall pick Ben Simmons didn’t play at all in 2016-17 due to a foot injury he suffered just before the start of training camp.
Fultz was just one of the additions Philadelphia made to its roster this summer, with veterans J.J. Redick and Amir Johnson joining the team as free agents. The hope in Philadelphia is that a fully healthy roster can push for a playoff berth in a weakened Eastern Conference next season.
