I don't get how they would have had a better chance at a td with an onside kick than where they were then.

Because they needed BOTH a TD and a FG anyway. There were 24 second left from the 30. Unless they score a 30-yard TD on the very next play they were likely to not even have enough time left for an onsides even if they then scored a TD. I suppose they could have taken one endzone shot and then kicked, but that still bleeds clock. As it was, if they recover the onsides they at least have a shot and know exactly what they need to do. Correct move in that specific situation.
