#7I thought this was true. Knew about the Shawn Green game:
The MLB record for total bases in a single game is 19, shared by Shawn Green and Nick Kurtz. Shawn Green achieved this on May 23, 2002, while Nick Kurtz matched the record on July 25, 2025. Both players accomplished this feat by hitting four home runs, a double, and a single.

#8IMHO, the greatest single-game hitting performance might have been 1993 Mark Whiten. 4 HR and 12 RBI in one game:
Mark Whiten holds the Major League record for most RBIs in a single game, with 12 RBIs. He achieved this feat on September 7, 1993, while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Cincinnati Reds.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

I was upstairs (3rd deck) behind home plate at this game.
When A-Rod just missed his fourth homerun (deep flyout), old Yankee Stadium shook. I've been to the old Stadium 100 times in the past, but I never felt the big old ball orchard in the South Bronx shake before.

#14Amazing how good these guys are. When any of them get that heater thing going in a game, they are super human.
It’s such a high level of skill it is scary.
If you make the pro level , you are freakishly talented.

You guys who have played organized ball know that you're taught as a kid to go opposite field, you must shift your weight to the back foot, and wait on the pitch, which Wade Boggs called "weight and wait".
It's not easy going opposite, especially if you're a pull hitter; you need to concentrate, and the kid makes it look natural.
On the MLB level, the hitter has two-fifths of a second to decide whether to swing or not.
That's all, .4 of a second.

Sure . No problem . Just wait a hundredth of a second longer and hit it when it’s further through the plate while traveling 90 + mph.
Unbelievable.

#18Per the Wade Boggs note (above), I was a big Boggs fan:
*I am of the opinion that he was the best natural hitter from the 80s. The talent was amazing. Ability to hit the ball to all fields, seemingly at his own whim.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

Ever watch Boggs take BP before a game? He would work on his swing from the outside in. He would start by having the pitcher throw everything on the outer half. If it was not there, he let it go. He never missed and after about 6 swings he would start hitting everything in the left field seats. Maybe 7 out of 10 clears the fence. No moon shots , line drives. Then he would work around the field taking balls to both gaps and eventually pulling homers down the right field line.
it was like watching a machine do it. All the homers were usually no. More than 5-8 rows up. No moon shots . Everything on a line. Guy was incredible.
And ever read about him drinking beer? Check it out. It’s legendary. Lol.

Have watched interviews. And read the articles. Heard about his ability to pound beers.
Heard about the Batting Practice show. Guy was a master of his craft. Could have hit a lot more homers, but that wasn't his game.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#25I do think 1986 hurt Evans and Boggs. Closing out Game Six would have been a series win over a 108-win Mets team:
1) Evans gets more distinction, likely makes the HOF. It's amazing that he doesn't get more recognition.
2) Boggs was a no-brainer HOFer. But he would have gotten credit for being on the team that broke the Curse of the Bambino.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#28Kurtz is spent; he needed this day off.
Managing fatigue
July 27, 2025
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said that Kurtz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros due to lower-body soreness/fatigue, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Kurtz went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in Saturday's 5-1 win after his historic 6-for-6 performance Friday that included four home runs, eight RBI and six runs. The rookie will get a well-deserved break Sunday, with Kotsay characterizing Kurtz's absence from the lineup as more of a rest day, even though the skipper conceded that Kurtz was dealing with some fatigue. Kurtz will still be available off the bench Sunday and should return to the lineup for Monday's series opener versus the Mariners.
