    Buddy Harrelson passes
The only man to be in a Mets uniform for both world series titles. I still remember him waving Ray Knight around 3rd on the famous Buckner play. Older folks here will recall his fight with Rose.

When I think of Harrelson as a player, one thing comes to mind. Different era in baseball.

Back then, middle infielders were often smallish. It was really about fielding your position, any offense was a bonus.

The Met teams from 1969-1970-1971 were so much about pitching and defense. Harrelson was solid and reliable. The pitchers benefited from the play behind them.

Some classic pictures from those teams. Tom Seaver (RIP) was awesome. Nolan Ryan was like a young colt. There was really a question as to whether Ryan could harness it and stay up. Of course, Nolan went on to become a great pro.

Lastly, when I think about the 1969 Mets, first thing that comes to mind = Tug McGraw. "Ya gotta believe."

What about the defensive plays in the outfield? How many runs did they save on the Tommy Agee plays and the great Ron Swoboda running catch?

Damn, he played the game right.

Buddy was the very definition of a dirt dog, and that is a very good thing.
Dirt dogs are rare these days, Buddy was a good one.

Do you remember Tom Brunansky's sliding catch in RF for the Red Sex to clinch the AL East?

Yes, I do. He slide close to the Pesky Pole. He went out of sight of the cameras.

With no camera, some question as to whether he actually caught it. But the umps ruled it a Catch.

I was at that game in Fenway.
(It was a clean catch, no trap)
