Laker, got a Gretzky trivia question for you
OK. Wayne won enough NHL awards to fill a mantle (x10).

Name two NHL awards that Wayne did NOT win: Excluding goalie award (Vezina).

*One he was NOT eligible for, b/c of a technicality.

*One other award he WAS eligible for but never win.

      1) Yes. Was ineligible for Calder (ROY) b/c they counted the one year in WHA.

      2) I think your answer of Richard award is technically correct. But they started that award very late in Wayne's career:

*My answer is the Selke trophy (for Best Defensive Forward). Selke = great list of two-way forwards. Wayne's defense was never considered worthy of winning the Selke.

I remember my dad telling me in the mid 80’s they’d have to split up Gretzky’s goals and assists for hockey pools or obviously whoever got first pick would win. His assists would go first and goals would still go in the 20’s. Incredible

Yeah, Mickey. Guy blistered the record book. Dominated the League Leader categories for a decade.

Fact. Pools just excluded Gretzky due to the huge advantage of selecting #1.

                  i would say "Very little."

I say that b/c they were on the ice together rarely. Only a few Power Plays. So 90% separate time.

The one I'd have to ask: *Jari Kurri was Wayne's Right Wing linemate.

Kurri got to 600 goals. I have to imagine that Kurri benefitted GREATLY from having Wayne as his center.

In the L40 years, the Gretzky trade is easily the most mind-boggling transaction I can think of. Even today it seems implausible. It's a trade that couldn't happen.

Dave Semenko ( aka Stone Hands Semenko ) played along side Gretzky for a period of time. His sole purpose was to step in and deal with anybody who took liberties with the great one. At one time he held the record for scoring in 10 straight games. That speaks volumes about Gretzky making everybody around him better

Kurri would have amounted to be an average winger without Wayne

We all know Gretzky wasn’t known for his defensive play. He was a weapon short handed though. Most goals all time on the penalty kill.

Ya, John Madden won the Selke one year. Great Short-handed goal specialist.

Some great names on the Selke trophy list. Fedorov, Datsyuk, Jere Lehtinen. Lehtinen was a great +/- player.

Not the current players. But at one time, I knew the NHL players inside and out.

Certainly not my BEST trivia question. Just thought it was interesting when you consider how many trophies Wayne won.

*Excluding the Norris/Vezina, I found one more trophy Wayne did NOT win:

...It's similar to the Lady Byng re: sportstmanship. Designed to recognize "perseverance". Well, it's hard to persevere when you're lapping the field in Points.

The Masterson often went to a player coming back from injury or health issues. Went to Mario Lemieux and Cam Neely, as examples. A little surprised Wayne didn't win this one later in his career for being an "ambassador" to the sport.

Kurri was average. He was the biggest Benefactor of Wayne. Didn't he follow him to la?

Not sure I ever saw a stat. Wayne must have assisted on (roughly) half of Kurri's goals.

*Found it interesting to watch the 1980 USA game vs Finland. Al Michaels mis-pronouned Kurri's name. I'm sure he had no idea who he was.

My recollection is that Jari was much less potent when he got to the Kings. Of course, he was a good bit older by that time, too. Not as explosive in his 30s.

Kurri basically became old when Gretzky left. He got that last ring vs Boston when messier carried them with Ranford.

Klima big goal after sitting on the bench for the whole game.

Kurri would have amounted to nothing without Wayne.

Yes, Laker. I remember all of that. Granted, it's been a while.

Klima was a great sniper. He sometimes lost ice-time b/c wasn't a great 2-way player.

Yes, Klima scored the big goal. Broke the Bruins' backs.

Messier was a horse. Still young. Saw a video where guy asked Gretzky:

"If you had stayed in Edmonton...how many more Cups you think you would have won?"

                                                  GRETZKY: "Probably four more."

That's an honest response. I say Four more, minimum. How many other teams would ever have Messier as their 2nd-line center?

Mark Messier IMO was the best hockey player that ever played until he retired.

Chucky how did the 1998 Canadian team not win gold at the Olympics? They had at least 3 maybe 4 future HOFers ( hockey not my best sport)
Was it because of their age, they were getting older! The great one was at least 36!
If I remember correctly the USA was favored and lost in the gold round to the Czech Republic
