The original report was that only the AFC would be allowed an 8th playoff spot... this would also include NO BYE for the 1st seed team. Of course they said if you do it for the AFC you have to do it for the NFC. Interesting.

I'm trying to remember and Google isn't helping, How did sportsbooks handle NBA/NHL "To make playoffs" bets during the covid stoppage/shortened seasons? The NHL let 24 teams in the playoffs (12 per conference) that year and I want to say Caesars graded "yes" and "no" as winners for certain teams around the 8 seed bubble.

As little as the top seed means in this day and age, it's no big deal and it's certainly better than letting an extra team into the playoffs. It isn't fair to Buffalo but these are extraordinary circumstances.
