Most of the people up in arms about these historical figures weren't even aware of past misdeeds by the men whose statues they now defile, and that goes for blacks and whites alike.

1st amendment protects the right to burn the flag (safely) as a form of protest (among other reasons).

It also protects the right to the Klan to hold peaceful marches. It also protects the right to draw cartoons making fun of Biden or to have a candidate running for office make fun of a Veteran who was a POW for 5 years. Just to be clear though, the protection is against having the gov't come after you. It doesn't protect you from having people boycott your business or publicly shame you or try to ruin you etc. It protects NFL players from having the gov't go after them, but doesn't protect them from their employers if they have clauses in their contracts about on field protests etc.

Social media has been an experiment that has led us to this cancel culture. So you take your career into your own hands when you want to exercise that 1st amendment.

The United States Flag Code (4 USC Sec 8 Para (k) Amended 7 July 1976) states: "The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning" - here's the key...it's a code, not an enforceable law. If it were, there are never ending violations of the code beyond burning it. Like desecrating it by turning it into clothes, or having it touch the ground (as happens all the time with those giant flags at football games)
