Ramón Jiménez, Fernández's stepfather, defected from Cuba in 2005, settling in Tampa, Florida. Fernández attempted to defect unsuccessfully three times, with each failed defection attempt followed by a prison term. Fernandez, along with his mother and sister, defected in 2007. On that successful attempt, José's mother fell overboard when the boat hit turbulent waters, and José had to dive into the water to save his mother's life.

If he can jump into turbulent waters and save another person how did he drown in the calm miami beach waters? Maybe there is more to the story.

Went to Mets Marlins gm few weeks ago sat right next to miamis dugout, these three Spanish kids behind us were screaming in the dugout talking to the players and I remember Jose Fernandez and Fernando Rodney talking to them for the half inning I asked my Spanish girlfriend what they're saying she's like the kids were asking for money and just fuckin around. They ended up calling them over to the dugout to give them signed balls. Just cool seeing him just talking to people in the stands during the gm nice guy.
