At least 30 people were killed in the southern French town of Nice when a truck ran into a crowd celebrating the Bastille Day national holiday on Thursday night, French TV channel BFM TV said.
The truck rammed into the crowd on the Promenade des Anglais seaside walk in the centre of town.
French television channel BFM TV said the local prefecture in Nice was treating the incident as an attack and was asking people to stay at home.
The reason for the crash remained unclear.
An eyewitness said there were "bodies everywhere".
Al Jazeera reporter David Coady was at the scene.
"We were just moving off. People then started running and then I heard bangs," our correspondent said.

Unfortunately, we are going to need hard line, right-wing, wartime leaders across the world for the next 5-10 years. We need people in power who terrorists are scared shitless of. We need leaders who are willing to terrorize and perform horrible atrocities on all terrorists, aspiring terrorists and anyone who had any significant connection to these fuckers helping these people carry out these attacks or even in nuturing them to a hateful, extremist mindset necessary to do these things.

Once these fuckers and their helpers, and aiders and abiders and nuturers are largely wiped out, and the rest live in constant horrible fear, we can move back toward more moderate leaders.

I'm all for gun control but this horrible event brings home the fact that crazy muthafukkers can kill you in many ways. We need to spend more money on mental health in the US and put more money into protecting our borders by tracking everyone that steps foot into this country. I have a good friend that lives in Nice and I'm too shocked to even call her right now.

Things will NEVER change until we help those people love better lives. Many of those folks are living the shittiest existence you can imagine. Most don't have a pot to piss in. It is very easy to kill yourself when there's nothing to live for. We have to find a way to help these countries advance into the modern world so that they don't live a life of despair where they blame the Western world for all their problems. Same goes for this country and it's inner cities. Until we help people enjoy their life, they will not know what it means to preserve their life and preserve your life as well. We have too many people in this country that have nothing to live for. I'm not talking about hand outs, I'm talking about giving people opportunity.
