SCARY security risk for sports bettors or just a cool new software?

When a password appears on screen as a series of asterisks or dots, you simply view it through SeePassword's magnifying glass to reveal the actual password text. In our testing, See-Password had no problem with passwords stored by Internet Explorer— all the sites we tried yielded their secrets.

    – PC Magazine, Fall 2004 issue

I can see this being very helpful for bettors who lose their password lists or forget their password. Same could be said for passwords for banks, porn, or newspapers as long as you have accessed before on your computer and still have it showing up. At same time allows anyone who has access to your computer the ability to see both your user and password, and then use it access it at a later time. Also could be used on donated computer, computers in landfills etc.

I thought that these passwords were somehow encrypted by windows or the software to protect them. Pretty scary and interesting at same time.

This is not a new one (it wasn't new in 2004 either), similar programs were used before this too....this is why you should never let people to use your PC who you don't trust....also this is why it's not a good advise to use the "auto fill-in" option for passwords, and it's advised to empty your Temp Internet files sometimes....

There are many tools which can be used to get your password ....for example there are key-logger softwares, which logs all keystrokes you make, and the page where you use it - and it can be used without the knowledge of the user, it is "mainly" used to check what the children do with the internet, but....if you have a funny colleague with 3 spare minutes with your computer...it's not hard to find out what could

I was using a smiliar program back in 1997 to view password. There is no security in the asterisks when typing in as password.

                    Natrass,
You don't have to worry about passwords, just as long as no one is using your PC but yourself. I refuse to let anyone the PC i use for sports betting.

freebie - I have no doubt you are right, but if that is the case where can you look up what the password is without this software? It must be stored somewhere on the computer if that is true. Is it in cookie files? I am sure I am like a lot of people and use the auto password so I can bet quickly, so am interested in the subject.

Nope it's not in the cookies, neither in the temp int. files, it's more complicated, it's in a hidden file - decoded. But trust me, it means nothing for someone who knows what - and how - to check. (this is for secure (https) sites).

Passwords for non secure sites can be found much more easily, so keep deleting cookies and temp internet files....always use a firewall (for example Kerio), use softwares agains Spywares (Spybot+Spyware Blaster+AdWare), and don't let anyone who you don't trust near your computer...

Lol this is not true. Years ago when I knew much less about computers and firewalls ( ) , somebody hacked my computer, and did funny things with my gamebookers account (wanted to suck my money to his account using p2p bets), for luck, I logged in soon and could cancel all these bets after contacting with support ASAP, since that I am using firewalls....The hacker seemed to find us from a betting forum, because 2 other forum members were attacked...and they were not as lucky as me, they lost money...so don't think that this couldn't happen with you....

                              sorry fixxer,
I was kinda refering to people who use public PC such as internet cafe or public hotspots. I'm pretty tight with securities around the house. I use a Cisco PIX firewall to do most of the filtering.

You can disable IE from remebering your password by doing this:
                              1) tools
                              2)Internet options
                              3)Content
                              4) Autocomplete (Under personal Settings)
5)Make sure "remember password is not check"

                                Hello freebie!

I never use autocomplete for the mentioned reason....
I am not lost in this topic too, working as an informatician now... but I think others will find useful how to disable this option, I should've posted it under my post, glad you mentioned it....
