Here's a solid writeup with some decent insight: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/...?#article-copy

If Jack Van Berg says anything about racing, pay attention. It's like hearing Tony Gwinn talk about hitting or Jerry West about the game of basketball. If he says it was the indian casino lobby, then that's what it is.

I agree that the weaker have to go to let the stronger survive, I just haven't paid close enough attention to think that Hollywood was one of the weaker.

Easier, simpler ways to gamble. Very expensive to run a race tack. The end is coming to the sport in most areas of the country.

Gold is always writing negative about the game of horse racing. The sport probably will be downsized, but it will survive. Great game.

place was located smack in the middle of possibly the worst neighborhood in LA. no one wanted to drive there so they didn't. plus an aging clientele with no replacements will doom any venue. they still have 2 major tracks in the area so they will suck up the dates. problem is stabling the horse population. as far as the bettors go they are building a state of the art otb facility in the poker casino right next door. no one seems to care to watch them live anyway.

Spent a lot of Fridays there during the Summer for $1 beers when I was working for the clippers. Team used to pick up or tab and buy us a box .. Loads of fun. Great memories there

Few things are as depressing as live racing run in front of a crowd that would fit in your yard. The land is more valuable to a developer who can build office buildings, condos, shopping and restaurants.

                                      RIP.

I just don't understand how they are going to develop the area. You have the Forum and a casino/otb...who's going to buy a new condo there? Degenerate gambers? jj?
