Agreed. Obama was elected in no small part for his promises to end the war in Iraq, but he also promised to escalate the war in Afghanistan. It should be clear to every American that this war doesn't have a foreseeable end, so it follows that there is no point in fighting.

Did we learn nothing from watching the British fight the IRA? Even if our goal is to end terrorism, it cannot be done by military force. The best thing we can do for our international reputation at this point is to withdraw from Afghanistan and provide aid to rebuild the villages and towns that we have bombed. This is easier to say than it is to execute, but we have a military with unlimited funding that can be anywhere in the world in 24 hours. The biggest hurdle is lining up the politicians behind such a policy.

Radical Muslims hate us largely for the following American policies, and it's not hard to understand why:

  • American military bases in Saudi Arabia. (Holy land for Muslims)
  • Estimated 100,000 dead in Iraq, perceived to be a war for oil.
  • Estimated 20,000 to 40,000 dead in Afghanistan.
  • Billions in aid to Israel as they are perceived to occupy Palestinian land.

Until a successful resolution is reached regarding the issues above, terrorism is only going to get worse, regardless of the number of bodies and bombs we throw at our opponent.

As I said before, my vote will go to the folks who work to end these wars, not the ones who make empty promises.
