    Who sets the spread
I was wondering who sets the spread for NBA/NFL. Who are the people who decide one team is +5 or -5 that all these books follow in setting there lines

For American sports, lines will generally originate from Vegas oddsmakers. How they are derived varies from sport to sport but it is fair to say that initial odds owe more to mathematical formulae than opinion/instinct.

They will often move sharply early (a few hours) and by the time offshore books offer a line what was -5 might have moved to -2 (or -8).

I always thought they just put it at whatever they can do to make the public betting 50/50.

        A group called LVSC

        Las Vegas Sports Consultants

They set the opening line. They are a group that use several different formulas including their own power rankings, and handicap the game. Once they set a line & the books put it on the board, it moves almost immediately by sharps, which are LARGE money bettors. If sharps pound a line at -5, it will move quickly to -5.5, then maybe to 6, & so on until they can start taking in decent amounts on the +. Some college basketball totals, for instance, may move 10-12 points. I have seen many times opening lines at bookmaker move 6-7 points on totals in 30 seconds after being released

Not necessarily. As mentioned Vegas odds will often move sharply before offshore books post their opening lines. LVSC are not a book, they are paid consultants.
