    Be still my heart...
its time for the John Deere Classic!!

Yes this is not one of the marquee events on the PGA's schedule. How do we know this is the case?

Robert Gamez is in the field

OK, that was a cheap shot. I actually like Robert Gamez, but the man is washed up.

Anyway, they still pay green money for winning plays in this tournament. Anybody with early thoughts?

I couldn't tell you who will win but I do know Kenny Perry is a one-man wrecking crew when it comes to second rate tourneys, he literally mops up. He's trading at a top priced 9-1 at my books and I wouldn't put anyone off backing him.

Although I'm srill deciding whether to play or not, I do like Ryan Moore (33-1), Daniel Chopra (80-1) & James Nitties (150-1)

I might play for 1/4 Units!

I've been watching slocum, trying to nail him at the right time, he had a really good run last year and can play well when he's in the mood and he'll pop up at a nice price very shortly.

            Good luck with your plays.

Sans Tiger, John Deere Classic tees off

With many of the top players either in Loch Lomond for the Scottish Open or using this weekend to rest and prepare for next week's Open Championship at Turnberry, the big names are not at the John Deere Classic this weekend. But that doesn't mean there isn't any money to be made picking through the field. Recent US Open champ Lucas Glover is drawing some attention as are last year's champ Kenny Perry and Zach Johnson.

              Tiger Woods, ladies and gentlemen.

Woods was the easy favorite (as usual) at 3-2 to win last week’s AT&T National in Bethesda, Md. And that’s precisely what he did, nailing a 20-foot putt on the 16th to beat Hunter Mahan (16-1) by a single stroke. Woods also drew triple the TV ratings that the National pulled in last year when he missed the tournament.
Alas, those ratings are bound to shrink again at this week’s Tiger-free John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., home of the par-71 TPC at Deere Run.

Woods isn’t the only one taking a pass on Silvis. Many of the world’s top golfers are in Loch Lomond this week for the Scottish Open, the European Tour’s warm-up event for the 2009 British Open at the nearby Turnberry course. So we won’t see Geoff Ogilvy, Ernie Els, or Retief Goosen at Deere Run; the top favorite is defending champion Kenny Perry at 9-1. He won last year’s event in a playoff over fellow Americans Brad Adamonis (100-1 this year) and Jay Williamson (150-1).

It’s common practice in a non-Woods situation to squeeze value out of the betting odds by eschewing the favorite and looking a little farther down the list of contenders. A case can be built to support Perry; he’s a regular fixture at the John Deere Classic, playing it eight times and finishing in the Top 5 on five occasions. But last year was Perry’s first victory, and he went into Silvis having won two of his previous four stops on the PGA Tour – all with Woods and his ailing knee on the sidelines. Perry’s only other win in 2009 was in January at the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The hottest non-Tiger commodity on the Tour right now is U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover at 18-1 odds. Glover has played very good golf since taking his first career major, placing 11th at the Travelers Championship and fifth at the National. He only has one other career victory since joining the Tour five years ago, and that was in 2005 at Walt Disney World. However, Glover is clearly on the rise after taking the U.S. Open and finishing second at Quail Hollow, one stroke ahead of Woods. The winner was 2005 John Deere Classic champ Sean O’Hair, but he’s not in Silvis this week.

Glover is tied at 18-1 with Iowa native Zach Johnson, a local favorite in the Quad Cities who’s also on the tournament’s board of directors. Johnson came in first at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Valero Texas Open, yet he’s never finished higher than 20th at the John Deere Classic. Glover was 11th in 2007 before missing the cut last year.

You’ll find a pair of veteran golfers wedged in between at 14-1 odds: Steve Stricker and David Toms. Stricker was the PGA Tour’s Comeback Player of the Year in both 2006 and 2007, and he’s enjoying yet another renaissance after winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational in May. That’s Stricker’s sixth Top-10 result in 14 events this year. But he hasn’t played since tying for 23rd at the U.S. Open, and this is his first trip to Silvis since tying for 51st in 2006. Toms hasn’t won on the Tour since the 2006 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for weekend, so long hitters like Davis Love III (28-1, 298.9 yards per drive) will be in better position to take advantage. Then again, according to Tour correspondent Brett Wright, Love is planning to hop on a flight to South Carolina after Thursday’s opening round (along with Glover, Charles Warren and D.J. Trahan) to attend the memorial service for Jonathan Byrd's father. They’ll fly back for the second round. That’s a lot of wear and tear for everyone involved, both mentally and physically. John Senden (297.2 yards per drive), on the other hand, is available at 33-1 and just happened to win this event in 2006.

Late-round TV coverage is available on the Golf Channel for the first two rounds and CBS on the weekend, starting at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
