I was reading an article about whether the NHL will participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Though there decision is based on financial aspects, I believe it's time to leave the Olympics to the amateurs again.
It was a good concept when the Dream Team came around, but that novelty has worn thin. We already have players in the NBA getting rest days 1-2 weeks into the season. Why give these guys another excuse? I'm not a big fan of the NHL shutting down for almost 3 weeks either. I believe it took the wind out of the sails of the 2014 season.
Olympic ratings were down 9% from 2012, even though the site of them was only 1 hour away for EST. I've personally never been an Olympics fan, and just find them boring. A think a lot of the public would agree. It used to be a novelty to watch women's archery at 7 am Sunday morning. I think a lot of people finally woke up realizing the would normally watch this garbage at any other time. Why watch it now?
While were at it, just let minor leaguers participate in the WBC. MLB teams have major investments in their players. Why put that am risk (especially the pitchers) right before the season has started, at the time their players should just be getting into season shape? Same with the NBA players. Why have a lot of the league's stars put forth full effort, when they should actually be healing from the previous season, so they can potentially give us the show we deserve with the tickets we buy?
Time for teams to put a clause in all players contracts, banning them from Olympic play. Wouldn't it be a lot more dramatic potentially seeing another 1980 USA hockey team anyway?
