Analysis shows lower US fatality rate on synthetics

Latest figures show synthetic tracks are safer ... get ready for the argument to come full-circle again

"Horses running on artificial surfaces suffer fatal injuries at a statistically significant lower rate than horses running on dirt courses, according to epidemiologists who have analysed data collected for a project tracking equine injuries.

According to an analysis of 754,932 starts over a two-year period ending October 31, 2010, horses running on artificial surfaces suffered fatal breakdowns at a rate of 1.51 per 1,000 starts, compared to a fatality rate of 2.14 breakdowns per 1,000 starts on dirt...."

If race tracks with cheaper racing had syn. it would be a true comparison.

hmm i wonder if humans had a fataility rate of 2.14 every 1000 times we did something, we wouldnt even do it anymore. that is crazy. so that is saying if you have a 10 horse field and 10 races a day you have a horse fataility 1 in 5 days. wow something has to be done

            This

The majority of low level races are run on dirt tracks where horses are more likely to break down.

Yes this study is saying that over 1000 fatal injuries occurred over the life of the study (2 years) and this is an improvement

trainers and their connections should look more closely at the training tracks and their daily procedures in japan,as simon bray of tvg reported.they treat their horses as national sports heroes, and take excellent care of them.don't know if this is possible, but,if it can be done,do it.

i always heard that catastrophic breakdowns were less on synthetics, but tendon and ligament injuries were way up on the "artificial turf"
