#10Stewards penalize Castellano, Borel for Marathon mayhem
In a formal ruling issued Sunday, the Board of Stewards suspended jockey Javier Castellano for six days for causing interference at the five-sixteenths pole in Friday's Breeders' Cup Marathon (G3), an infraction that resulted in the disqualification of his mount Prince Will I Am (Victory Gallop) from second place. Fines were also handed down to both Castellano and Calvin Borel, who were embroiled in a fight following the race. Borel had ridden one of the horses impeded by Prince Will I Am, A. U. Miner (Mineshaft), and the veteran rider went after Castellano in the winner's circle.
Citing them both for conduct against the best interest of horse racing on the association grounds (Churchill Downs), the stewards slapped Borel with a $5,000 fine, the maximum allowed, and Castellano with a $2,500 fine.
"We reviewed the films and listened to their explanation on what occurred during the running of the race," Kentucky State Steward John Veitch said in a Saturday statement. "The stewards will make a decision on Saturday, today, on what the penalty is going to be. We will write out a formal ruling on Sunday, November 7, and apply what penalty we think is appropriate."
Castellano's suspension runs for six racing days, from Thursday through November 14 and November 17-18.Comment -
