Is it my imagination or Does Tom Durkin the NYRA track announcer sound like Ranger Smith of Yogi Bear Jellystone Park fame?I had him on HRTV a second ago and I thought he was going to talk about stealing picnic baskets.hehe!
Today is opening day at Fonner Park in Grand Island ,Nebraska.I went there a couple times for opening day years ago and it used to be a fun day of betting and usually winning.Horses would ship in from all over and then you had Nebraska horses that wintered there and didn't race.It always made for interesting handicapping.You would get some former allowance horses from Churchill,Santa Anita etc.running at cheap claiming prices where everyone jumped on their bandwagon and they couldn't handle the bull ring turns.
I guess places like Fonner should be admired because they are the true minor leagues of horse racing and it's hard competing against all the casinos these days.
