Too bad you can't turn the clock back 25 years!

Ya,the states now let the tracks have slots and table games in some states and it subsidises the purses so they are able to run races at all.We have a harness track in Minnesota called Running Aces and it's mandatory they run a minimal amount of race cards a year just so they can have a card room.

I remember going to greyhound tracks like Sodrac Park in North Sioux City,South Dakota in the early 80's and the place was packed and the handles were large. They drew in people from Kansas City,Omaha,Des Moines and Minneapolis-St.Paul.Just a neat old school track atmoshere.

Then came the states allowing Indian gambling off the reservation.I have no problem whatsoever if the Indians have sportsbooks, off track betting, slots, table games, taxfree tobacco, liquor, fireworks or even prostitution on their own land. Then the states and cities told them, lets become partners where you can build your casino on the interstate in our town 100 miles from your reservation.Look at where most reservations are located in this country usually a few hours away from metropolitan cities out in the boonies. They should have had the law where people go to travel to the casinos instead of the casinos relocating off the reservations close to the metropolitan cities.

Then what happened was other states and towns started saying, why even get the Indians involved,we can just have casinos ourselves. As states and cities spent more money and got deeper in debt, they needed gambling revenue to help stay afloat.Look at the outright waste of money the states and cities that depend on gambling revenue do.

So,if it weren't for states and cities to illegally have become partners moving gambling off the reservations, chances are ,other states and cities wouldn't have started casinos on their own either.

Sad story, but these chain of events killed poor old racing of any kind.People would rather sit in front of a machine like mindless morons pumping money in them.It got to where the machine companies made machines where you didn't even have to drop coins in them or pull a handle. That's not gambling.Ya,the states made sure they call it gaming instead of gambling to soften the affect. It makes a moron feel better to say they lost money gaming then gambling. It's like they were playing chess or something instead of pumping money in a machine that made decisions for what random generated numbers came up.

Las Vegas and Nevada are great.People can get out there a couple times a year and they satisfy their gambling fix.You can't just hop in your car from home in the old days to blow your paycheck. Most greyhound tracks too were supported by casual tourists that might get to a track twice a year. The Black Hills greyhound track was one such track that did great on just tourist patronage right up till the casino explosion in the mid 80's.

Spot on. Additionally, the exorbitant takeouts associated with horse/dog racing makes it a very difficult form of gambling in which to gain an edge. Just the reason I quit the track. Fact is there is easier money to be made elsewhere.

id much rather bet the dogs than t-breds, jockeys ruined the sports of racing for me.
