    Horse Racing Rundown?
Can someone give me a rundown of how Horse Racing Betting works and what the Kentucky Derby is all about? Ive never really gotten into the horses, always been a sportsbook guy. But I hear all these talks about the Derby and I want some action.

So how do you bet on horses, and whats all this "oh i got 5-9-16 for the derby" stuff I see every where?

Now I know the Kentucky Derby is a big race and ive always watched it, but I always thought the Kentucky Derby was just one big race. What is all this Oaks stuff about and all these other races? Do the same horses race or like other horses that arent as good or something?

So can someone help me out and give me a rundown of how all this stuff works...

Horse race betting is different from sports betting where there is just an A or B side. There are many different options in horse betting, think of it as prop plays in sports but the payouts can be much larger in horses. In a field such as the Derby its impossible to figure out what every horse( there are 20) is going to do so it comes down a lot to covering sereval combinations to take into account racing styles of several horses(then getting lucky!!)

Bet style similar to sports betting :
Win - pick a horse or horses and bet them separately and one of them has to win and you get the according odd i.e 6-1, 20-1 etc
Place- the horse can finish 1st or 2nd to collect but your price is not as large b/c it shares the pool with another horse
Show- horse can be 1st , 2nd , or 3rd to collect but the pool gets divided even further ( AND NEVER EVER bet multiple horses to show b/c you're betting against your own money)

The big payouts comes in exotics like PK3,4,6 wagers where you have to hit the winner in each leg of the ticket.
Keeping it simpler , you can play exactas, or trifectas.

exacta- you have to pick the horses to finish in exact order 1-2
trifectas- you have to pick the horses to finish in exact order 1-2-3

Tri's can pay boxcars in these types of races depending on which horse cross the finish line.

So ( I'm not a t-bred guy, I've grown up racing standardbreds so I rely on other information to help handicap but I'll put up what I'm playing. Take a look at http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/365978...-horse_racing/ you get an idea of how certain horses have taken to the track at Churchill and the track has come up muddy. Maybe someone can chime in what happens to the track b/c I think it gets fast if they seal it and may play to the front runners more as long as it not raining at post time.

First bet is called an exacta part wheel 4,6,10,14/1,4,6,10,14,15this means that the 4 or 6 or 10 or 14 must win and one of either the 1,4,6,10,14 or 15 can run 2nd to collect.

I'm taking a stand against the favorites to win and think sidneys Candy might be in for a ruff trip but I have to respect Lookin at Lucky just dont want him to win. It costs $20 for a $1 exacta b/c there are 20 combinations. I'll play a $5 exacta for $100.

    Trifecta 4,6,10,14/1,4,6,10,14,15/1,2,4,6,10,13,14,15,16

it's called a trifecta part wheel, using same horses as exacta and filling in the trifecta with a few more horses.

So either the 4,6,10, or 14 must win. Next either the 1,4,6,10, 14 or15 must run second and either the 1,2,4,6,10,13,14,15,16 must run 3rd. There are alot of combinations covered here so the cost is $140 for a $1 tri since there are 140 different ways the horses can come in. If it hits it pays large b/c the lowest shot on top is 15-1 in the book.

So if you generally bet 100 on a sports game to win a 100 , its definitely the right time to go against the favorites and try to get paid.

Total invested $240 , expected return anyhwere between 0 and 5000.

changing it up cant see american lion there the way speed is not holding up
