The basic explanation:
straight bets
1st horse win $2
1st and 2nd exacta $1straight
1st thru 5th$0.20(twenty cents)straight each bet

I have an account where I do this to help me stay accurate and practicing.
Because sometimes, I have to work, and I can't watch the races live.

However, if I do get a day off, and I can make it to the racebook, I have given myself a 'tool' to make other plays.
I just don't have enough time to post every little impulsive play while I'm at the racebook.
So, if I take a few hundred bucks with me, I bet more.

I'll watch the prerace show, study the tracks expert's, reexamine pp, etc...

Still tricky.
If you followed me yesterday, you might have given up because I only won race 2, and 3 of my first 5 winners broke stride.
But, if you hung in there, races 6-10 we're all winners.
I think if you follow my plays, it could help you if you try some things-(wheels,keys, including pic 3s and 4s, stuff like that)
My plays could be useful, but I'm not perfect.
