    TVG lays off some staff
Television Games Network has fired approximately 20 workers, including several of its on-air commentators, as part of an effort to reduce costs, the company’s chief executive confirmed on Thursday.

Although company officials would not comment beyond a statement acknowledging the firings, the biographies of four television hosts – Bob Baedeker, Chris Kotulak, Frank Lyons, and Frank Mirahmadi – were no longer available on the company’s website on Thursday.

Stephen Burns, the chief executive of the company’s parent company, BetFair TVG, said that TVG was “restructuring segments of company operations, including streamlining some production roles.”

TVG was bought by Betfair in 2009 as part of an effort to expand to the United States. The company launched a pioneering betting-exchange operation in 2000 in the United Kingdom, and it has been lobbying aggressively for legislation that would allow expanded types of internet gambling in the States.

TVG was once the U.S. market leader in account wagering, but its position was eclipsed after Churchill Downs Inc’s Twinspires.com closed a deal to merge with Youbet.com last year.

According to records provided by the Oregon Racing Commission, total handle through TVG’s Oregon hub was $608.6 million in 2010, up 19 percent compared to total handle of $511.4 million in 2009.

they weeded out 4 probably will cut back on weekday hosts and play the music and show the feeds. they need to get rid of that .25 per wager fee that no one else charges and they would pick up many more accounts. wake up tvg.

So they keep the yuppies like Ken Rudulph and Todd Schrupp, and get rid of the knowledgeable ones like Bob Baedeker. This station has been going downhill for a long time. Now they have Michelle Yu, who tells everyone that she is an expensive date, loves the bubbily, and aparently got thrown in jail for something she does not remember. She sounds like she is trying to sell herself. TVG is falling by the waysides. They are getting desperate. The 25 cent charge per wager is just ridiculous. They complain about the takeout at California tracks, and they add another 12.5% on to a $2.00 wager. They do not televise Santa Anita races live. If these guys had a brain at all (and right now, that is very questionable), they would merge with HRTV. They have a better track line-up.

As others are saying they need to get rid of the .25 cent per bet and that stupid $5.95 a month for the videos and they might have some new customers.

Twinspires, Xpressbet and a few others dont charge a penny for those services.

The guys they fired don't do silly antics on the air, that's why they were fired.

They were way overstaffed with on-air talent. This was coming for months.

Honestly, some of their "talent" could be replaced by computer programs

first one that comes to mind is Matt Caruthers, just need a voice track on loop of a guy who needs to clear his throat saying "I think the favorite can be beaten in this race, I'm going to go with the 14-1 longshot with absolutely no chance of winning instead."

I think Caruthers appears to be a nice guy, but he is the worst handicapper I have ever seen. He must be down $100,000 betting horses. His win strike has to be lower than 5 percent.

He constantly yaps about lone speed, only to see his horse swallowed at the top of the stretch. His other angel that never works is betting horses off long layoffs. Another one is Horse A loses to Horse B by 50 lengths. Horse A runs back and he loves him because he lost to a good horse. Problem is the good horse was 50 lengths in front, so Horse A sucks. It doesn't matter that he ran against a good horse.

on the broadcast, having missed the cut.

Carruthers won't bet a horse off of a layoff. He hates horses off of layoffs. His whole schtick is lone speed and 2nd off a layoff. Most of my win bets are horses off of layoffs.

why won't tvg at least try to dispense with the $.25 tariff of each bet to see if their revenue and membership picks up the pace.i beleive it would drastically improve for the tvg coffers.i know i would bet more there if i did'nt have to deal with that $.25 a bet B.S.
i have'nt bet there for at least 2 months because of this.

Getting dusted by a great horse isn't exactly a positive. He also looks pissed if one of his longshots sees any kind of attention from the betting public. God forbid somebody else should think it is live, he seems to want dead money horses.

those tvg hosts don't even pick 10% of the horses they tout on air. they have interns that handicap the races and they read it off a teleprompter. Mr. know-it-all todd shrupp admitted it on air. he should have been canned for berating his fellow hosts on their picks which they didn't even make.

Exactly. I don't know why they insist on pushing those PK 4 tickets, when doubles and Pick 3s are more hittable bets.

They are in the business of trying to sell tickets. It's easier to convince someone to spend $60 on a pick 4 instead of a double. One time, I think it was a couple of years ago, Schrupp kept track of his pick 4 ROI on the air. That didn't last long as it didn't take long for his ROI to be an embarrassment.

Exactly, that .25 wager fee is so rediculous. Noboby wants to pay that. They call my house all the time offering me a free 30 days and I tell them what good would it do, I'll never pay the .25 wager fee so why start.

I like Matt's picks and Simon's. I consider their picks when making my pick 4 tickets. I don't give a rats ass if they don't play their own ticket? Why would you everyday? That Mr B guy has the onset of dementia and was silly how many times had he no clue what was happening.

I don't like ken, but they probably kept him because of his race. I do think he belongs in news and entertainment, but not TVG.

Michele Hue (spelling?) was on fire the other day at Chuckytown in the Handicapsule, but that was about the only time I've seen her hit consistently.

I usually turn TVG on for some back ground noise when I'm only playing a few races every now and then, but after a little while some of those guys can be obnoxious.

One of the personalities I like is Vic Carusso. He is a member of another forum I visit and is always personable on there; seems like he knows what he's talking about when he's at the desk, which is more than you can say for some of those people!
