VANCOUVER - In a move that breaks with tradition, and the NHL rules, the Vancouver Canucks named Roberto Luongo the team's captain Tuesday, even though the goaltender will not be able to have a C sewn on his uniform.

Coach Alain Vigneault said Luongo's leadership abilities makes him the obvious choice to become the 12th captain in Canuck history

The Los Angeles Kings acquired defenseman Sean O'Donnell from the Anaheim Ducks, receiving a conditional selection in the 2009 NHL Draft in return.

Buffalo Sabres center Paul Gaustad will miss up to the first three weeks of the regular season after he had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.

Jeff O'Neill has ended his NHL comeback bid with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Already without defenseman Marek Zidlicky because of a sore ankle, the Wild lost defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron in the second period after he broke his nose in a fight with Kyle Beach.
It was Bergeron's third fight in three games. Strangely, his only NHL fight came during his rookie year in 2002-03.

just one note i want to pass along is that the NHL teams are no longer required to make injuries public this year. So a bad back might be a pull groin.
