-30-08 NHL News and Notes (Khabibulin sent packing)
Khabibulin is entering the final season of a four-year, $27 million contract. He joined the Blackhawks from Tampa Bay as a free agent after leading the Lightning to the 2004 Stanley Cup.

The Blackhawks signed free-agent goalie Cristobal Huet to a four-year, $22.5 million deal in July, giving them two top goaltenders.

Khabibulin was the Blackhawks' highest-paid player until defenseman Brian Campbell signed an eight-year, $56.8 million free-agent contract with the team on July 1.

But Khabibulin has been inconsistent and injured over the past three seasons. In 2007-08, he appeared in 50 games, posting a 23-20-6 record with a 2.63 goals against average and .909 save percentage.

"We're going to do what's best for the Chicago Blackhawks," general manager Dale Tallon said in August about the two No. 1 goalies. "If that means keeping Nick, we'll do that. If not, we'll move on."

O'Neill calls it quits on comeback bid with Hurricanes

He notified the team of his decision after Sunday's exhibition win over Philadelphia. Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford said it's difficult for a player who sat out for a season to return to the league, but that O'Neill looked fine in training camp.

O'Neill was a key scorer on the Hurricanes team that reached the 2002 Stanley Cup finals.

The two sides reached an agreement to release him from the training camp roster.

He will clear waivers and be playing for about 1.5 a year when it's over.

He did clear waivers. Now where this is considered the regular season now he can be sent down to the minors and brought up at half his salary, which would be about 3.5 million.

But wait.....there are some teams interested. Yes there is......

So he has not been sent down yet....yet.......wait and watch.

His contract is guaranteed, so he'll be getting his almost 7 million no matter where he plays this year. If his contract wasn't so large, another team might take a chance on him, but i'd be surprised if someone does at those numbers. I still think he's got some game left in him.

He'll still get his 7 mil, (3.5 paid by Chicago), but only 3.5 for a cap hit to anyone that picks him up.

I don't know, they just signed Auld for three years. So they would probably have to dump Gerber somehow, cause they don't have enough cap room for all three. But I would think that he would be a huge upgrade for them.

hawks were looking good til they signed Huet

He is absolutely terrible. Khabibulin was consistent, i think, despite what article says. Unfortunately he was consistently giving up 2-3 goals/game.

                    Deroit Lions = Receivers

                    Blackhawks = Goalies

No luck, why would they give Huet 22 large?

                    LOL

Huet is alright, he is good enough to get them to the playoffs, I don't think he is a Stanley Cup winning goaltender.

It's only 3.5 to the new team if he's sent down and then claimed on re-entry waivers. Any trade means the new team takes on the entire salary so that limits the trade possibilities to very few teams and clearly the Hawks would have to take someone else's overpaid deadweight to get rid of him.

It's not guaranteed. The team only has to pay him 2/3 of his salary to buy him out and then he is free to sign with whoever. BUT what is goping to happen is Chicago will loan him out to the Russian KHL and they will no longer be on the hook for his salary this year.

Also when a team buys out a players contract the value of the buyout is spread out double the length of time that was remaining on the contract. So if he had 2 years left on the contract they buy him out, but the value of the buyout is spread out 4 years so there isn't as much of a cap hit to the team.

Makes no sense. They have 2 goalies under contract. Besides Atlanta would not make the playoffs with 2 Roberto Luongo's in the net.

Teams can only buy out a players contract during a specified period in the summer. The Hawks did not do so, therefore they cannot buy him out at this point. His 6.7 million for this year is thus guaranteed, it's just a matter of who ends up paying it.

It doesn't make sense, but when has anything that Atlanta has ever done make sense?

Now it's looking like he may end up in Russia.
