    Can Anyone Knowledgable Explain This
(I'm new and hope I am in the correct section.)

I saw three lines today from different sportsbooks and was wondering (1) how they would affect the house's hold and why they would be used, and (2) how they could be used by a player to his advantage. I'll try to be brief.

    BOOKMAKER DSI 5 DIMES

    San Diego -14 -14(-15) -16 (+10)

    Baltimore -5 -6 (-05) -7 (+20)

I know what they mean; I am wondering the motive for their utilization by the competing books (especially with key numbers like 7 and 14).

    Thanks in advance.

The lines on the far right (I assume 5 Dimes) are for Teaser control. The points gained by teasing the dog don't mean much, while the points lost by teasing the favorite are much more valuable.

Thanks LT. Then you're saying that 5 dimes is not concerned about someone betting the dog at +16(-30), and when the public takes the dog in the Baltimore game at +7(-40) this is also not a concern. I always thought you should worry about the correct number and let the teasers fall where they may when you book. Doesn't the straight bettor have a nice middle going when he can lay 5 at Bookmaker and take +7 at 5 Dimes? Is it possible they are merely trying to draw action on the two dogs in this situation?

        +7 -140 is the same thing as +6 -115 and +16 -130 is only pennies better than +14 -105.
