Usually it occurs right before game time or when the lines are first posted, watch sbrlines right before game time

one way to do it is if you see 70% of public is on 1 side, but the line moves in the other direction, then that side is the sharp side because more money is on this side even when only 30% of people are on it.

there aren't many sharps on this board, just a bunch of compulsive gamblers and paid posters.

To be honest, the term sharp is pretty lame.
Just because someone bets big doesn't make them a sharp.
I guess there are certain players that are well known that can move action, but it's just a little out htere.

ummm who said betting big makes them sharp? your simply assuming this. but it isnt far-fetched to say a sharp bets big. with that said, i must agree there aren't too many sharps, but there obviously are some. fishhead, nicky, LT are a quick few.
you can even use sbrodds.com though. week one for instance, it was something like 70%-colts, 30%-hou, yet the line was moving opposite of what you'd expect.

It just says multiple books, but it had over 120,000 bets for Monday nights game. I used it all through college basketball season, and I did very well. It's a good tool.

If you follow steam, by the time you bet it, there is no value

Are the SBR ODDS %'s off of one book though?
Also, LT isn't a sharp, he sucks.

Don't follow the SBR odds %'s
Sorry, I love the lines service, but those %'s are not very good.

You gotta watch the odds screen carefully on game day.
Most big bettors are pretty sharp. And it takes alot of money to move lines on game day.
Look for "dramatic" line moves. With some practice you will be able to figure out what's going on.
Until you get the hang of it, you can use a site like sportsinsights.com.
The basic principle to winning @ sports is getting a line better than the Pinny/matchbook close. Steam chasing is just a parasitic way to do so. Either you can model a game better than the book can, (which is hard), or you chase a sudden move at Pinny at other books slow to move their lines. A good way to watch the line move close to close is to get an account at Pinnacle (don't need to fund it) and switch line view to "dynamic", the line will change without need for page refresh and recently changed numbers will be in red.
edit
One thing I have noticed is sometimes Pinny will be the last to move the line on a big steam. Either the other books have access to Pinny line movement before everyone else, or the big bettors are hitting all the other books before Pinny since all the other books are basically moving their lines when Pinny does, this way the sharps can hammer them and not worry about Pinny moving on air and then hit them last.
