2009 NFL Database (for database seminar)
Attached is a do it yourself explanation about how I go about building a database step-by-step. I don't know how to do much more than copy and paste, so it is a pretty simple process, albeit time consuming. I spent about six hours putting this one year together. Would have been closer to four, but I was stupid and discovered I had wrong data 3/4 of the way through, and had to go back to scratch.

Smarter people could do it faster and no doubt better. I am a self taught plodder.

I hope will be useful both for those who are both going to attend and for those who are unable to attend the how to build and how to use a database workshop on this coming Friday. The workshop is part of the SBR bash 2010 style. Learn while you party!

It includes all regular season games of all teams from last year, 512 lines. Each game is in twice, as you may want to add fields from the data link provided. All data is from the Covers.com team records section.

IF it attaches OK, I'll do a bit of explanation in a minute. There are different worksheets showing steps towards how I went about building it as well. We only have two hours on Friday, this should give us a leg up on discussing how to use a database for fun and (hopefully) profit.

Seems to have attached the file OK.

The first sheet is the raw data I used to make the database. It is copied from Covers. Sheets two and three talk about deleting bye weeks, to get the data ready to breakup into columns.

I don't know how to do that much in excel really. I tried to show in sheets four to seven how I go about making the data useable, by breaking it up into columns for first excel, then later to access for analysis.

Each game is in twice since I wanted to leave the live link part in. This will allow you to add from a box score any other fields you want, anything from score first to 1st downs to quarter scores to turnovers. You can add as many columns as you want. You can find data elsewhere and tie it in by key fields if you chose.

Is one year of a database useful? Not really. But it is a start. IF you can build one year, you can build ten years. It is the same task repeated. Don Best and/or Sports Options scrape a little easier than Covers for this sort of thing, but this is "how to" workshop, we might as well start with the basics.

I will be around at 3 pm on the day of the workshop if anyone wants to meet before the "official" start of the event.

Anyone has any questions, they can post them here too. The workshop will start off with a chance for everyone to introduce themselves and say what they would like to get out of the workshop. I will make notes and try and work towards the goals of the participants.

It would be nice to hear from someone who attended the seminar. How did it go? Anybody care to share what you all learned about merging data sets?
