how do the oddsmakers make the odds?
What criteria goes into making the odds ? IN baseball is a lot of stats on the starting pitcher? Does someone at pinnacle have a system and what does this system consist of? I see in several instances that a better pitcher is a dog or even a big favorite ?????????
How does an Oddsmaker at say pinnacle determine the odds?

I am guessing they take odds from a Vegas book. I'd love to see their cpu system they have for making odds.

Advance formula composed of power rankings and other variables that are updated daily spit out a number....books like Cris, Pinny and the Greek do this and most of the others just wait to see what they have then copy....

I personally have no idea how lines are created, but I have heard some theories/rumors...

I heard that all lines originate from a group called the Las Vegas Sports Consultants, not sure if they are still running the show.

Nowadays I figure all lines must be computer made and then tailored by experts, posted, then moved by sharps and then squares.

The first book that has lines up is Greek, at least for NHL lines, try shooting them an email and maybe they will tell you?

LVSC isnt anymore....CRIS Has there own odds makers and pay others. LVSC has power rankings and the guys try and break down the best number or something.

They basically have "power rankings"the oddsmakers and use those.

also there not based on feel as much as they used to be from the oldschool oddsmakers.

                    power rankings

                    home/away

                    hot or cold recent form

                    lineup changes/injury

can derive a line that is close to the line books put up using just these factors

size and amount of action on a side will move the line

They make their own fair lines. They must use some of the same techniques as the oddsmakers.

Don't understand what you mean by "LVSC isn't anymore". LVSC still is in business with most of their clients being Nevada books. Offshores put the lines out most of the time before LVSC, but LVSC is only putting the lines out to their clients first, not the public.

Step 1: Statistical analysis (computer based) spits out a number.
Step 2: A series of adjustments are made to reflect public perception, weather, injuries, rest, etc
Step 3: Adjusted line is released at lower limits overnight
Step 4: Books adjust based on early action hoping that they have acheived a line that will provide relatively balanced action prior to raising limits.
