Need thoughts on using Excel for Computer handicapping development...
I have been working 4 years with multiple computers...most recent Intel core I5 with 8G Ram... My excel files during the college football season get to about 15Meg with multiple calculations and my computer locks up... Well, I spilled water on my computer Friday... and yes it was water...It hit Best Buy--One lap top has 4 slots allowing 8M of RAM per slot totalling 32M...but it is 1200 plus $300 for the RAM etc...do I really need that much to run a simple Excel Sports betting program... Should i be worried about the processor or the RAM or is it a Bill Gates issue... I know this is sports betting website, but here I sit nonetheless. Dave

You can build a desktop computer with twice the specs of a notebook at 1/5th the price. And then it becomes easily upgradable from there.

32gb of ram will help for sure and may solve the problem. but the only real solution is to get it out of excel. If excel is what you are sticking with maybe get rid of all formulas that reference formulas that reference formulas And stick some of the calculations in a VBA macro.

OT: can anyone recommend a 15" laptop around 1500 $ upgradeable to 16 GB RAM and having slots for both SSD and HDD?

If I have referenced formulas which I obviously do...is there an easy way to put them into VBA? Most of my micros are fairly simplistic. So if I have them run the macro after the initial data download you are saying that won't need as much RAM...Can I use the macro record button in anyway? I know these are easy questions... Enjoy Dave

Doing serious research on excel is impossible. I only use excel to track my betting record. For research use a real database. I like python with its sqlite3 module. Doesn't get any simpler, faster, and more convenient than that.
