Looking for some NFL turnover related stats
I want to get a little deeper into turnovers. So am looking for:

    - Defensive scoring. Points put on the board by the defense. Obviously these points are scored immediately after a turnover.

    - Depth of turnovers. A turnover on the opponent's 20 yard line is worth a lot more than a turnover on the own 20 yard line, but this doesn't show up in the stats.

    - Number of points by offense on drive after defense created the turnover.

    Thanks!

Going to have to expand this a little bit. Punting game is become more and more important (SD punter tonight has given the Chargers two short fields, after pinning down Indy at their own 5 yard line, resulting in two SD TD's... It all started with the punter).

'Length of Field' is determined by:
        - turnovers
        - punts
        - punt returns
        - kickoff
        - penalties

With the help of these numbers it should be possible to determine a 'length of the field' stat for each team. Instead of considering each category separately, which is kind of scattered and impractical, this would/could give a number that can be directly translated to the yardage a team can be expected to have to cover.

Chargers 17 - Colts 17. Chargers win in OT. Punter Scifres set up every SD score in regulation with a punt inside the 5 yard line. Punting has reached another level.

I am not sure I agree with your statement about depth of turnovers being significant. Don't you gain as much by points you prevent on defense, in addition to additional points you score on offense? A turnover created on your own 20 might not significantly increase your own offensive output, but it definitely has a much larger impact on fewer points given up, so shouldn't it basically be a wash?

An interception at your own 20 yard line doesn't mean that you practically prevented a TD. The ball may have been thrown from 50 yards back. So that is not the mirror image from intercepting the ball at the opponent's 20 yard line.

There is a formula that translates field position to pts : 5.91 - 0.077 x yards to TD. Check out the turnover article that durito posted a link to.

As mentioned, I may prefer to incorporate the turnovers into a formula for length of field (for each team). And then relate that to number of possessions. That could produce an interesting stat.

Just not sure how to go about that.
