NFL Player News - Week of 6/29/20

Patriots | Cam Newton drew rave review
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton's former offensive coordinator, Norv Turner, told Patriots head coach Bill Belichick that Newton was a great fit. 'My whole deal is, when Cam was healthy, and we were there with him [in 2018], we were 6-2,' Turner said. 'His issue was more health than anything else, and from what I understand, I don't think these are health issues that he can't overcome. He's had the time off now. I think he'll be great.'

Dolphins | Jordan Howard likely for goal line work
Miami Dolphins RB Jordan Howard is likely the top choice for carries anywhere near the goal line, according to beat writer Joe Schad.

NFL | Johnny Manziel likely done
Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) admitted that his football career is likely in the past. 'In the past, probably, is the way I'd characterize it,' Manziel said, leaning forward and without a moment's hesitation. 'I've finally got to a point where I'm trying to achieve happiness in life, not happiness on the football field.'

Saints | Michael Thomas delivers on contested catches
New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has hauled in 57.4 percent of his contested catch opportunities since 2016, according to Pro Football Focus. That mark ranks third in the league over that span.

Buccaneers | Contested catches no problem for Chris Godwin
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin has hauled in 58.8 percent of his contested catch opportunities since entering the league, according to Pro Football Focus. That mark ranks second in the league since 2016.

Dolphins | Several WRs to compete for spots
Miami Dolphins WRs Allen Hurns, Gary Jennings and Isaiah Ford will be among the receivers to compete for one or two spots on the final roster.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins have DeVante Parker, Preston Williams and Albert Wilson as their top three wide receivers. Behind them, Jakeem Grant should make the team due to his ability as a return man. That leaves one or two spots open for Hurns, Jennings or Ford. Jennings is learning multiple positions this offseason and certainly has the most upside of the three. Hurns is the seasoned veteran who is good for about 20 catches a year. Ford was thrust into a larger role over the last month of the 2019 season and finished with 21 catches over that four-game stretch. We'll see if that momentum helps him win a spot on the 53-man roster this year.

Falcons | Qadree Ollison should have role
Atlanta Falcons RB Qadree Ollison could be used as a short yardage running back this upcoming season. He had four rushing touchdowns that were three yards or fewer in 2019.
Footballguys view: Ollison may be no.4 on the depth chart right now, but he could quickly catapult to as high as no.2 by the end of training camp. Todd Gurley is the team's starter but if he can't stay healthy then the team will be looking for someone to be their lead back. That could be Ollison given his power, balance and burst that the others on the roster (Ito Smith, Brian Hill) don't have. We love him in dynasty formats and will keep him on waiver wire speed dial in redraft leagues.

If he stays healthy it could be a good signing.

It is good signing no matter what. If he gets injured or sucks, it was a cheap one-year contract and he would get no incentives. Low Risk with possibly High Reward.

    Tuesday Update

Giants | Evan Engram runs in video
New York Giants TE Evan Engram (foot) was shown running and cutting hard in a video posted to social media Monday, June 29.

Vikings | Loaded boxes nothing new for Dalvin Cook
Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook carried the ball 147 times in 2019 when there was at least eight defenders in the box - the second-most such rushing attempts in the league last season - according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: Cook is the focal point of the Vikings offense, so it's no surprise he would see stacked boxes on a regular basis. In fact, the Gary Kubiak system thrives on that defensive look as it plays right into the play-action passing that is rampant therein. Expect more of the same when it comes to defensive looks for the Vikings in 2020.

Eagles | Miles Sanders in rarified air
Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders recorded 25 touches in Week 15 and again in Week 16 last season, becoming the first Eagle to do so in back-to-back games since 2014 and the first Philadelphia rookie to do so since Steve Van Buren in 1944.
Footballguys view: Sanders showed last season that he could be a feature back in the NFL. He finished 2019 as the no.16 fantasy back and should finish this season as a RB1 for Fantasy GMs. Sanders has a current ADP of RB11 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Kyler Murray works out with teammates
Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray worked out with a number of his teammates Monday, June 29. WR DeAndre Hopkins, WR Christian Kirk, RB Kenyan Drake, RB Chase Edmonds and TE Maxx Williams are among the players participating in the workout.
Footballguys view: Just like a grip of other quarterbacks around the league, Murray is taking it upon himself to lead workouts. This virtual offseason is going to have an impact on teams, but these workouts can help further build or establish chemistry between a quarterback and his weapons. Murray is a QB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2020 and it wouldn't surprise us to see him finish as a top-5 fantasy quarterback.

    Wednesday Update

Packers | Jordan Love signs rookie contract
Green Bay Packers first-round draft choice QB Jordan Love signed a four-year contract with the Packers Wednesday, July 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Patriots | Cam Newton could be tagged for 2021
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton could be hit with the franchise tag following the 2020 season, as there's no provision in his one-year contract preventing the Patriots from doing so, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports was told.

Packers | AJ Dillon under contract
Green Bay Packers RB AJ Dillon tweeted a photo of himself signing his four-year rookie contract Wednesday, July 1. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson focused on silencing critics
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has his mind set on winning a playoff game in an effort to silence remaining critics following his MVP 2019 campaign. 'I need to win a playoff game before anything because I'm tired of that already,' Jackson said. 'Once I get tired of something, I have to make it happen. So, that's my goal right now; focus on being a better player all around. Not just a (better) player, but teammate as well.'

Browns | Donovan Peoples-Jones could contribute in return game
Cleveland Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones will compete for a role as the No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5 receiver behind Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry in 2020. He's also expected to have a big opportunity to contribute in the return game, according to Andrew Gribble of ClevelandBrowns.com.
    Link to story

Patriots | Rival expects Pats to keep three QBs
An unnamed AFC East head coach told Dianna Russini of ESPN he expects the New England Patriots to keep three quarterbacks for the 2020 season and 'use Cam Newton perhaps as the wild card.' The coach said he doesn't expect Newton to start Week 1 in the offense and knows 'for a fact the Patriots love Jarrett Stidham.'

Browns | Odell Beckham Jr. stresses commitment to Cleveland
Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. stressed on Twitter Monday, June 29, he's committed to playing for the Browns for at least the upcoming 2020 season. 'U can find me in The LAND homie! We got unfinished business,' Beckham wrote in a reply to Los Angeles Dodgers P Alex Wood who wrote '@obj to the Patriots before the season is done. BANK IT!'
Footballguys view: With the Patriots landing QB Cam Newton, many have speculated they will now try to make a move for Beckham as the two have been working out together this offseason. Beckham had a disappointing season for the Browns in 2019, but so did most of their passing game. With better protection for QB Baker Mayfield we should see him perform more efficiently which will have a trickle down effect to guys like Beckham.
    Link to story
    Odell Beckham Jr player page

Redskins | Steven Sims plans for bigger role in 2020
Washington Redskins WR Steven Sims said he has been training this offseason to 'play maybe 90 plays in a game' and is eyeing a bigger and more versatile role in the offense. 'I want to show that I can run routes as well. I'm not just a gadget player. I'm a receiver, and I run routes,' Sims said.
Footballguys view: We'll keep an eye on Sims in deep dynasty formats. Undrafted out of Kansas in 2019, Sims flashed for Washington...especially near the end of the season. Over the final four games of his rookie year, Sims snared 20 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns. Washington added WR Antonio Gandy-Golden and RB/WR Antonio Gibson in the 2020 NFL draft, so we'll see how Sims responds to more competition in 2020.
    Link to story

Patriots | Cam Newton not guaranteed starting job
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton was not guaranteed the starting job, according to a source Monday, June 29. The job will go to the best quarterback in training camp and the competition will include Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Newton is the most talented quarterback on the roster, by far, if he's healthy. Stidham had first-round tools at Auburn but a poor senior season caused him to fall to the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. Hoyer is a journeyman veteran with plenty of starting experience but little upside. The Patriots will likely go with Newton as it should be clear he's the best option in training camp.
    Link to story
    Cam Newton player page

Colts | Jordan Wilkins not a lock for 2020 roster
Indianapolis Colts RB Jordan Wilkins is 'not a slam dunk' to make the team in 2020, according to Kevin Bown of 1075 The Fan. Bowen says Wilkins will need to lock down a presence on special teams to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
Footballguys view: Wilkins is a talented back who can work on all three downs but he just keeps getting pushed down the depth chart. Marlon Mack and Nyheim Hines were already in place above him in the pecking order, then the Colts added RB Jonathan Taylor in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Now, Mack and Taylor will split carries while Hines gets it done on third downs. That doesn't leave much for Wilkins in the backfield.
    Link to story
    Jordan Wilkins player page

Buccaneers | Tampa Bay not interested in Antonio Brown
Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) is not drawing any interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to sources Tuesday, June 30.
Footballguys view: Many were assuming that with QB Tom Brady in Tampa then the team would consider adding Brown. That doesn't seem to be the case at this time. There seems to be interest in Brown around the league but we'll see what the league decides about his pending legal situations. Brown is likely to land with a new team and get another (final?) chance in the NFL sometime before training camp.

    Thursday Update

Bills | More chances for John Brown? Wed Jul 1, 09:25 PM
Buffalo Bills WR John Brown's production will be helped and not hurt by the addition of WR Stefon Diggs, according to QB Josh Allen. 'I think this is going to give him an opportunity to have more chances to catch the ball,' Allen said. 'Man-to-man, he's extremely tough to cover.'
Footballguys view: Brown isn't going to draw the toughest coverage anymore in 2020. Diggs should get an opponents no.1 cornerback, leaving Brown to match up against a no.2 corner. Brown's speed allows him to get by defenders in the blink of an eye. He was fairly consistent, with a few big games, last year in the first 11 weeks of the 2019 season. After that, Brown's production was low except for one game. We'll see if he can be a bit more consistent in 2020 all season long.

Titans | Darrynton Evans may be returner
Tennessee Titans RB Darrynton Evans is expected to compete for the kick returner and punt returner jobs during training camp.
    Link to story

Steelers | Anthony McFarland to have offensive role
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Anthony McFarland is expected to be a change-of-pack back for the Steelers this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: McFarland reminds some in the scouting community of Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay. The rookie from Maryland has speed and can make a big play happen from anywhere on the field. We'll see how he fits in behind James Conner in 2020. The Steelers have a jam-packed backfield and McFarland's role may not have much fantasy relevance.
    Link to story

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster may be used in slot more
Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster may be lined up in the slot more often this upcoming season because of the addition of WR Chase Claypool, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Brooke Pryor.
Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster had a down season in 2019 and is looking to bounce back this season...in what could be his final year with the Steelers. With QB Ben Roethlisberger back and healthy, we could see that bounce-back season from Smith-Schuster. He has a current ADP of WR12 (3.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.
    Link to story
    JuJu Smith-Schuster player page

Giants | Darius Slayton made big plays last year
New York Giants WR Darius Slayton posted five touchdowns of at least 25 yards last season, which was tied for most in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Injuries hit the Giants WR corps hard last year but Slayton was a bright spot with his big-play ability. This year, Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate return healthy but they don't stretch the field like Slayton does. We could see Slayton outperform his current ADP of WR38 (8.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Mecole Hardman a deep threat last season
Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman posted five touchdowns of at least 25 yards last season, which was tied for most in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Hardman's game is all about speed, speed and more speed. The team is going to keep using him as a deep threat as the no.3 receiver behind Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. Hardman is a WR5 with upside for Fantasy GMs. He could thrive if thrust into a larger role.

Lions | Kenny Golladay made big plays in 2019
Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay posted five touchdowns of at least 25 yards last season, which was tied for most in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Golladay made plays with three different quarterbacks tossing him the rock. Now, Matthew Stafford is healthy and that should help Golladay make an even larger impact in 2020. Golladay has a current ADP of WR8 (3.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) is interested in signing with the Seattle Seahawks, and it is believed that QB Russell Wilson would like the Seahawks to sign Brown.

Packers | Tyler Ervin has good chance to make roster
Green Bay Packers RB Tyler Ervin likely will make the final roster because of his value as a kick and punt returner, in the opinion of PackersWire's Zach Kruse.
Footballguys view: 2019 sixth-round pick Dexter Williams appears to be on the outside looking in if this is true. Second-round pick AJ Dillon will make it difficult for the team to carry a fourth running back that isn't a major contributor on special teams.

49ers | Jamycal Hasty may make team
San Francisco 49ers RB Jamycal Hasty has a chance to make the final roster if stands out during the preseason and shows he can be an asset in running and passing game, in the opinion of NinersWire's Kyle Madson.
Footballguys view: Hasty is a tailor-made third down back and he should be considered almost a lock to make the team if Jerick McKinnon can't stay healthy in camp. He should be rostered in very deep dynasty leagues.
    Link to story

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes made big throws in 2019
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 15 passes of at least 40 yards during the 2019 season, which ranked second among quarterbacks.
Footballguys view: Mahomes would have led this category if he had played the whole season, and he should be #1 this year. Keep this in mind if your fantasy scoring system rewards long touchdowns with bonus points.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott hit several long passes
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott completed 16 passes of at least 40 yards during the 2019 season, which led the league in the category.
Footballguys view: Prescott should hit even more this year with the addition of Ceedee Lamb. Tight end Blake Jarwin is a sleeper to target in the late rounds after being one of the more explosive tight ends in the league despite playing behind new Las Vegas Raider Jason Witten in the target pecking order.

    Titans | A.J. Brown a big-play WR in 2019
Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown recorded six receptions of at least 50 yards in 2019. No other receiver in the NFL had more than four receptions of at least 50 yards.
Footballguys view: Brown was highly efficient as a rookie year. Most believe he can not possibly sustain that level, but he can improve in his second year and he can also get more volume as the clear #1 receiver going into this season. You'll probably have to spend a third round pick if you want him.

49ers | Kendrick Bourne may be extension candidate
San Francisco 49ers WR Kendrick Bourne has had contract extension talks with the 49ers this offseason, but it is not known how much progress they have made during the talks, according to the Athletic's Matt Barrows.
Footballguys view: Bourne should be among the top 3-4 49ers wide receivers in snaps this year and while he might not be fantasy relevant, he could help keep any other 49ers receiver from being reliable in fantasy leagues.

49ers | Extension coming for Raheem Mostert?
San Francisco 49ers RB Raheem Mostert has had contract extension talks with the 49ers this offseason, but it is not known how much progress they have made during the talks, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows.
Footballguys view: Mostert was easily the best back in the 49ers backfield, but his ADP suggests that fantasy players still expect Tevin Coleman to play a large role in the backfield this year. If he gets an extension before the season, his ADP should rise, so it's a good time to get trade offers out there if you believe in him.

Patriots | More on Cam Newton's deal
Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Cam Newton's deal guarantees him $550,000 with a $1.05 million base salary. He can earn $700,000 in per-game roster bonuses and another $5.75 million in incentives. He can earn a maximum of $7.5 million.
Footballguys view: The Patriots have very little financial commitment to Newton, so they are risking almost nothing if his body broken. If he is healthy, he should be the heavy favorite to start with a solid chance to get back into the fantasy QB1 ranks.

Browns | David Njoku asks for trade
Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku has asked the team to trade him and hopes for a trade before the start of training camp. The Browns have told Njoku they would like to keep him, but agent Drew Rosenhaus said Njoku is intent on a trade.
Footballguys view: Arizona, Washington, Green Bay, and New England all make sense as destinations, although with the desire around the league to run more two tight end sets, Njoku could be a target for many teams. His dynasty stock should move up on this news as the signing of Austin Hooper limited his opportunity in Cleveland this year. If Njoku is traded, Browns fourth-round pick Harrison Bryant will get a lot more snaps this year.

I think bellichek will think of some genius ways to utilize Can that could revolutionize the game for a short period.

The problem will be lack of time for practice for execution

And Cam's willingness to buy into some sort of "gaget" role

But with all this down time, I'm sure that genius brain is not Taking any time off to scheme

    Sunday Update

Cardinals | Leap coming for KeeSean Johnson?

Jaguars | Fewer grabs for Leonard Fournette?

Texans | Brandin Cooks the top target?
Houston Texans WR Brandin Cooks will be QB Deshaun Watson's No. 1 target and lead the team in catches in 2020, in the opinion of Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com.

Jets | Chris Herndon in a bad spot?
New York Jets TE Chris Herndon could underwhelm in 2020 because of the way head coach Adam Gase utilizes the tight end position, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. When Gase was with the Miami Dolphins from 2016 to 2018, his tight ends finished with a league-low 150 catches in that span.

Patriots | Bigger role for Damien Harris?
New England Patriots RB Damien Harris has a 'great future' with the team, according to running backs coach Ivan Fears, and Mike Reiss of ESPN.com believes Harris 'is a good bet to take a significant leap in 2020.'

Bills | Jake Fromm an underdog for No. 2 job
Buffalo Bills QB Jake Fromm probably will be an underdog for the No. 2 quarterback during training camp since he did not have any practice this offseason and because QB Matt Barkley has a better understanding of the offense.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right for the 2020 fifth-round pick. Fromm was a three-year starter in college at Georgia and known as a game manager as a quarterback. He lacks impressive physical skills but he's an accurate passer who does a good job of leading his receivers. Fromm has the makings of a capable reserve quarterback for his NFL career.

Lions | D'Andre Swift signs rookie deal
Detroit Lions second-round draft choice RB D'Andre Swift signed a four-year contract with the Lions Saturday, July 4. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Swift was arguably the best running back in this draft class. He wasn't the first off the board, but the Lions were happy to scoop him up in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Swift is an efficient runner with over 31 percent of his 441 career carries went for a first down or a touchdown (per PFF). He's also a great receiving back, out of the backfield or even lined up out wide. Swift should be the lead back for the Lions and has RB2 upside for Fantasy GMs.

Patriots | New England optimistic in Cam Newton's health
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton is in town to complete his physical Saturday, July 4 - a process that will reportedly take a few days to complete - but the team is 'confident in his condition' and 'no issues at all are anticipated on his physical,' according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Newton missed most of the 2019 season with a foot injury he suffered in the preseason (against the Patriots). They'll be taking a look at that, but also his shoulder injury that has been an issue during his career. With almost a full year off to get healthy, Newton could look like his old self with his new team.

Bills | Gabriel Davis to make immediate contribution?
Buffalo Bills WR Gabriel Davis could be 'a plug-and-play weapon' for the team this season, according to Maddy Glab of the team's website.
Footballguys view: Davis is a big-bodied deep threat on the football field. In college at UCF, Davis compiled 620 receiving yards (out of 1,241 in 2019) on deep passes -- a mark good for no.4 in the FBS. He's limited as a route runner but has the speed to take the top off the defense. We're excited about Davis from a dynasty perspective.

Bills | Zack Moss to bring thump to backfield
Buffalo Bills RB Zack Moss is expected to play a role similar to the one that Frank Gore enjoyed in 2019, according to general manager Brandon Beane.
Footballguys view: The rookie from Utah reminds some in the scouting community of Browns RB Kareem Hunt. Moss is incredibly elusive and fun to watch with the rock in his hands. He's got a low center of gravity and great footwork which allows him to change direction on a dime. Moss is a work-in-progress as a receiver and will work as the no.2 back behind second-year pro Devin Singletary in 2020.
