NFL Player News - Week of 3/9/20

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

Seahawks | Cautious approach for Chris Carson
Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (hip) 'should be absolutely fine' for the start of he 2020 season, according to head coach Pete Carroll, but Carroll added that Carson will be brought along slowly. 'We won't overdo it with him,' Carroll said. 'He's had two great back-to-back seasons. We're going to take care of him throughout all the way to game time.'

Seahawks | Greg Olsen to contribute immediately
Seattle Seahawks TE Greg Olsen 'will make a very fast transition' into the offense, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Cardinals | Arizona to target a receiver?
Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy, Alabama WR Henry Ruggs III and Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb 'are definitely in play' for the Arizona Cardinals with the No. 8 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury. 'I'm always looking for a fast outside guy,' Kingsbury said.

49ers | Dante Pettis still in the plans?
San Francisco 49ers WR Dante Pettis has been criticized by head coach Kyle Shanahan, but Shanahan isn't 'close to giving up' on Pettis, in the opinion of Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
    Link to story
    Dante Pettis player page

Seahawks | Seattle talks with Jonathan Taylor
Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor met with the Seattle Seahawks at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Footballguys view: Seattle spent a first-round pick on Rashaad Penny just a couple of years ago but injuries and inconsistencies have kept him from producing at the expected level. They have Chris Carson as the lead back but he's been known to get banged up too. Taylor is one of the best and most productive running backs in the 2020 NFL draft. He's likely to be a late first-round pick but could slide into the top of the second round.

Cowboys | Low tender expected for Cooper Rush
Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys restricted free-agent QB Cooper Rush is expected to receive the original round tender this offseason, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Rush was undrafted out of Central Michigan in 2017. That means his tender would not come with any compensation if another team signs him away from the Cowboys. We don't think anybody will do that, so Rush should return as a backup option behind Dak Prescott in 2020.
    Link to story
    Cooper Rush player page

Lions | Jeff Driskel may return
Detroit Lions impending free-agent QB Jeff Driskel is a player the Lions are interested in re-signing this offseason.
Footballguys view: Driskel is athletic and has some starting experience that makes him an attractive backup option behind Matthew Stafford. They could bring Driskel back, but the Lions also need to find a young quarterback (possibly through the draft) to groom as the heir apparent behind Stafford.

Patriots | Phillip Dorsett to have open mind
New England Patriots impending free-agent WR Phillip Dorsett said he will go into free agency with an open mind because of the reduced role he received with the Patriots this past season.
Footballguys view: Dorsett could return to the Patriots but we think another team might take a chance on the speedy veteran. There's not too many super-fast receivers in this free agent class, and that benefits guys like Dorsett, Robby Anderson and Travis Benjamin.

    Tuesday Update

Buccaneers | Jameis Winston showcasing rehab online

49ers | No discussion with Emmanuel Sanders
San Francisco 49ers pending free-agent WR Emmanuel Sanders said Monday, March 9, that he has yet to engage in contract talks with the team, which suggests the team might let him test the free-agent waters.
    Link to story
    Emmanuel Sanders player page

Titans | Ryan Tannehill has talked with TEN
Tennessee Titans impending free-agent QB Ryan Tannehill has talked with the Titans about a new contract.
Footballguys view: The Titans could always use the franchise tag on Tannehill if they don't get something done but we feel they don't want to do that. They also have to get something done with free agent running back Derrick Henry. We'll see if they can get both deals done before the start of the new league year next week.

NFL | More positive news for Tua Tagovailoa
Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) underwent four-month scans on his surgically repaired hip Monday March 9, and received positive reviews on his recovery, according to sources.
Footballguys view: This follows the news about his recovery being on time coming from the Scouting Combine last month. Tagavailoa is going to be a top-5 pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The Dolphins seem like his most likely landing spot and they may even move up to get him if they have to.
    Link to story

Dolphins | Preston Williams to be ready for camp?
Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams (knee) said he will be ready for the start of the regular season, but the team hopes he will be able to participate in training camp.
Footballguys view: We'll see how Williams progresses through the offseason. We could see him being limited in training camp as the team prepares him for the regular season opener.
    Link to story
    Preston Williams player page

Cowboys | Dallas increases offer to Dak Prescott
Impending free-agent QB Dak Prescott (Cowboys) reportedly received a new contract offer from the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, March 9. In the opinion of ESPN's Todd Archer, the new proposal is expected to be in the neighborhood of $33.5 million per season.
Footballguys view: That's a deal that most thought he would take. It sounds like the two sides are close and we could see a deal for Prescott before the start of the new league year next week. If they don't get something done, expect Prescott to be slapped with the franchise tag.

4 year deal for a kicker? They tend to go stale once they have a few bad weeks. 4 years is a bit heavy.

I mean I get that but 4 years is still a lot of years and there would still be dead cap space if he got cut. Not much, I would think but, kickers are expendable.

Buffalo Bills TE Tyler Kroft agreed to a restructured contract Thursday, March 12, that can see him make $4 million in 2020 with $3.4 million guaranteed.
Footballguys view: The new deal eliminates the final year of his old contract and he will become a free agent in 2021. Kroft will push Dawson Knox for snaps at the tight end position.

Seahawks | Seattle meeting with Jordan Reed
Free-agent TE Jordan Reed (Redskins) is meeting with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 12, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Seahawks already added Greg Olsen this offseason but are looking for more help at the tight end position. Reed is talented as a receiver but he's hurt often and is not a player you can count on to play a full season. His price tag should be affordable but the chances he misses more time due to injury are high.

    Bengals | Auden Tate cleared
Cincinnati Bengals WR Auden Tate (knee) has been cleared to resume all football-related activities, according to a source.

Green Bay Packers TE Jimmy Graham was officially released Thursday, March 12.

    Link to story
    Jimmy Graham player page

Buccaneers | Tampa unlikely to pursue David Johnson
Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson likely will not be a target for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if he is placed on the trade block by the Cardinals.
Footballguys view: The Bucs need help at the running back position but Johnson is expensive and not the player he once was. There is some thought the Cardinals could trade away Johnson but with his big contract ($16 million remaining in dead money), they'd likely have to throw something else in just to move the veteran back.

    Titans | Dion Lewis released
Tennessee Titans RB Dion Lewis was released Thursday, March 12.
Footballguys view: The move was expected by the Titans. This saves them $4 million against the cap, and it's money they'll gladly move over to free agent Derrick Henry. Lewis is a good receiving back and should have plenty of suitors on the open market.

Agreed. I'd rather just draft a RB in the draft than pay someone $5-$10 million/year. Lots of good RBs in this year's draft and RB is the easiest position to fill it seems.

NFL players vote to approve CBA, 17-game season and expanded playoffs on horizon

The NFL players approve the new CBA, giving league a decade of labor peace

The National Football League will have 10 years of labor peace.
The players voted to approve the proposed CBA Saturday night. The new CBA will take effect starting in 2021 and will run until 2030. A simple majority of the players need to vote "yes" for the proposed deal to go through. The final vote was 1,019 to 959, the NFLPA released in a statement. There are roughly 2,500 players in the players union, so an estimated 79.1% of the players voted on the CBA.
Under the proposed CBA, the NFL will increase the season to 17 games (from 16) and the addition of an extra team to the playoffs in each conference. The 14-team playoff would have the top seed earning a first-round bye while seeds No. 2 through No. 7 would play on Wild-Card Weekend. The expanded playoff is expected to begin in 2020. The salary cap will be $198.2 million per club for 2020.
The active game day roster will expand from 46 to 48 players as practice squads will expand from 10 to 12 players in 2020. That number will increase to 14 players starting in 2022 (including between two and four players with unlimited accrued seasons per team). Also starting in 2021, the annual player revenue will increase from 47 to a minimum of 48% which can go as high to 48.8% with a "media kicker" from the new television deal.

"This result comes after a long and democratic process in accordance with our constitution," the NFLPA released in a statement. "An independent author received submitted ballots through a secure electronic platform, then verified, tallied and certified the results."
With the approval of the CBA, only one tag can be used this offseason, instead of teams having the option to use the franchise and transition tag. Higher minimum salaries will also take affect this season. THE NFLPA would have to sign off on delaying the start of the league year, which is scheduled for March 18.
"We are pleased that the players have voted to ratify the new CBA," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "Which will provide substantial benefits to all current and retired players, increase jobs, ensure continued progress on player safety, and give our fans more and better football. We appreciate the tireless efforts of the Management Council Executive Committee and the NFLPA leadership, both of whom devoted nearly a year to detailed, good faith negotiations to reach this comprehensive, transformative agreement."

I like the 17 game regular season, and 1 extra playoff team. Plus, only letting the top seed get a bye, instead of the top 2, is also good. 6 playoff games on Wild Card weekend will be fun.

The NFC and AFC will alternate playing 9 home games per year. The conference that plays 9 home games gets 1 home preseason game, while the other conference gets 2 preseason home games and 8 regular season home games. A maximum of 10 and minimum of 4 overseas games will be scheduled and the conference that has 9 home games will be the home team for all of those.

So the Jaguars will no longer have home London games every year.
