NFL Player News - Week of 3/2/20

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

Rams | Two skill position guys candidates for restructure
Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley and WR Brandin Cooks might be candidates to restructure their contracts this offseason. Gurley, who is signed through 2023, has a cap hit of $17.25 million for 2020. Cooks, also signed through 2023, has a hit of $16.8 million.

Rams | Jared Goff is candidate for restructure
Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff has a $36 million cap hit in 2020, and beat writer Rich Hammond suggests the QB is a prime candidate for restructure. Goff has it written into his contract that the team can restructure without permission from the player.

Browns | Rashard Higgins expected to hit market
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent WR Rashard Higgins is expected to test the free-agent market this offseason, but the Browns are open to re-signing him depending on the price, according to a source. The Browns met with Higgins' agent at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Footballguys view: Higgins never really got a great chance with the Browns over the last four years. Perhaps a fresh start will jump-start his career and that natural receiving talent he showed coming out of Colorado State. Higgins could be a steal for a team who picks him up...likely for a cheap price.

    Rashard Higgins player page

Jets | Quincy Enunwa not cleared yet
New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa (neck) has been rehabbing at the team's facility but has not been medically cleared at this point.
Footballguys view: Enunwa only played in one game last year. He may never be able to play football again due to this spine injury. Enunwa is on the books for $7.8 million in 2020 and there is $5.4 million remaining in dead money.
    Link to story
    Quincy Enunwa player page

Bengals | Cincinnati met with Joe Burrow
Louisiana State QB Joe Burrow met with the Cincinnati Bengals at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Footballguys view: So much for the 'he doesn't want to play for the Bengals' crowd. Burrow is very likely to be the No.1 overall pick to the Bengals. He's smart and accurate, drawing comparisons to Tony Romo...and even some Tom Brady comparisons by those in the draftnik community.
    Link to story

Broncos | DEN won't discuss extension with Phillip Lindsay right away
The Denver Broncos are not expected to discuss a potential contract extension with RB Phillip Lindsay until after free agency has opened and the draft has been completed, according to general manager John Elway.
Footballguys view: The Broncos can re-work Lindsay's contract after just two years because he was an undrafted free agent in 2018. Lindsay has back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons but has also had wrist surgeries in each of the last two offseasons. He's a smaller back and perhaps best suited for a part-time role. Do not be surprised if the Broncos draft a running back in the first three rounds of the 2020 NFL draft.

NFL | Laviska Shenault to need at least six weeks to recover
Updating a previous report, Colorado WR Laviska Shenault (core) will need approximately six to eight weeks to recover from core muscle surgery. The procedure will be performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia Tuesday, March 3.
Footballguys view: This puts Shenault out of action for the Buffaloes pro day in March. In fact, he won't be able to work out for teams before the draft...or at least he will be incredibly limited in private workouts before the draft. Shenault has first-round talent but he could fall to Day 2 of the draft because of his injury concerns.

Lions | Matthew Stafford interested in being traded?
Several coaches and general managers around the National Football League believe that Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford wants to be traded to another team, according to Michael Silver of the NFL Network.
Footballguys view: These rumors have been out there for some time and quite frankly don't make much sense. Stafford has a contract that would be cost prohibitive for the Lions to get rid of him. He has a cap hit of $21.3 million in 2020 and there is a whopping $32 million remaining in dead money.

    Tuesday Update

Browns | Kareem Hunt won't be charged for possession
Cleveland Browns RB Kareem Hunt will not be charged with possession of marijuana after his traffic stop on Jan. 21, a police lieutenant said Monday, March 2. The team announced at the NFL Scouting Combine that they intend to tender the restricted free agent, and there is no reason to believe the team would change that plan barring more trouble before the start of free agency March 18, beat writer Nate Ulrich suggests.

Cowboys | Dallas talks with Blake Jarwin's agent
Dallas Cowboys restricted free-agent TE Blake Jarwin's agent met with the Cowboys at the NFL Scouting Combine to discuss a long-term contract, according to sources.

Cowboys | Jason Witten not expected back
Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent TE Jason Witten does not appear likely to re-sign with the Cowboys this offseason.

NFL | Teams interested in James Morgan
Florida International QB James Morgan is receiving interest from the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and Las Vagas Raiders, according to sources. He is scheduled to meet with or work out for all three teams leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: The Bears, the Colts and the Packers all have interest as well. Morgan has a rocket arm but little control as a passer. His size and arm strength make him an interesting late-round/developmental quarterback teams will look at in the 2020 NFL draft.
    Link to story

Cowboys | Middle tender expected for Blake Jarwin
Dallas Cowboys restricted free-agent TE Blake Jarwin is expected to receive the second-round tender from the Cowboys this offseason, according to sources.
Footballguys view: That move would cost the Cowboys around $3 million. Jarwin can help this team move the chains and could be looking at an expanded role with the offense in 2020.
    Link to story
    Blake Jarwin player page

NFL | Tom Brady, Antonio Brown a package deal?
Impending free-agent QB Tom Brady (Patriots) has reportedly remained in 'consistent contact' with free-agent WR Antonio Brown and told him to 'keep mentally and physically strong' so the duo can reunite on the field at Brady's next stop, according to two people close to Brown.
Footballguys view: That would be a problem if the Raiders really want Brady based on how Brown's time with the team ended prematurely. The report is coming from people close to Brown, not to Brady, so take this with a grain of salt. The Patriots have interest in keeping Brady and we'll be monitoring this closely as free agency approaches in a couple of weeks.

Chargers | Franchise tag likely in Hunter Henry's future
Impending free-agent TE Hunter Henry (Chargers) is expected to receive the franchise tag from the Los Angeles Chargers if the two sides are unable to reach a long-term deal before March 12, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Henry is super talented but has never played a full 16-game season in his pro career. The franchise tag would run around $11 million for the Chargers to keep him for one more year. However, it would also give them time to find common ground on a new contract.
    Link to story
    Hunter Henry player page

Lions | Matthew Stafford good to go
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back) is 'completely healed' from the fracture in his back that cost him the final eight games of the 2019 season, according to his wife via social media.
Footballguys view: Stafford is the team's starting quarterback in what could be his final season with the Lions. There have been plenty of rumblings about him wanting out, but the Lions couldn't really trade him away given his current contract situation. The two sides should work together again this year and Stafford is still quite capable of playing at a high level when healthy.

    Thursday Update

Saints | Ted Ginn could return Wed Mar 4, 07:48 PM
New Orleans Saints impending free-agent WR Ted Ginn Jr. is a player the Saints could look to re-sign this offseason since he is a veteran presence for the younger receivers on the roster, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

    49ers | Kyle Juszczyk's option picked up
San Francisco 49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk's 2020 option was exercised Wednesday, March 4, according to a source. He is scheduled to make $5.05 million in base salary next season as well as $400,000 in bonuses.

Bills | Frank Gore will continue to play
Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB Frank Gore plans to continue his playing career and has started to train for 2020.
Footballguys view: Gore is not what he used to be but he can still be an effective veteran backup for any team in need at the position. The Bills are going with Devin Singletary as their primary back but bringing back Gore for another year could make a lot of sense.
    Link to story
    Frank Gore player page

Patriots | Tom Brady talks with Bill Belichick
New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady had a phone conversation with head coach Bill Belichick Tuesday, March 3, and no progress was made, according to a source.
Footballguys view: "Brady Watch" continues in March with free agency looming in a couple of weeks. We'll see if this progress actually leads to the Patriots keeping Brady around for the 2020 season.

    Jets | Trevor Siemian healthy
New York Jets impending free-agent QB Trevor Siemian (ankle) has received a clean bill of health after meeting with an ankle specialist this week, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Siemian has plenty of starting experience and is a smart player who can pick up a system quickly. He won't be in line to be a starter anywhere but many teams could have interest in Siemian as a veteran backup to a young starter.

    Friday Update

Colts | Jacoby Brissett needs to pull trigger
Indianapolis Colts QB Jacoby Brissett needs to make quicker decisions with the football, according to offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni. 'He always knew where to go with the football, and then we just speed that up a little bit,' Siranni said.
Footballguys view: The Colts are looking for an upgrade at the quarterback position in 2020. That's why they may be the favorite to land veteran quarterback Philip Rivers. We'll see if the Colts add a guy like Rivers which would force Brissett to a second-string role.
    Link to story

Redskins | Washington pushing for Amari Cooper?
Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR Amari Cooper is being recruited by fellow University of Alabama alumni who currently play for the Washington Redskins, according to John Keim of ESPN.com.
Footballguys view: Washington could use some help at the wide receiver position and Cooper may be hitting the open market. The Cowboys have to get a deal done with him and QB Dak Prescott before the start of free agency. They may use the franchise tag on one of those players if they can get a deal done with one of them.
    Link to story
    Amari Cooper player page

Redskins | Bryce Love eyeing OTAs
Washington Redskins RB Bryce Love (knee) said Thursday, March 5, that his goal is to be participating in OTAs.
Footballguys view: We have some interest in Love when it comes to super deep dynasty formats. We'll see if he can get healthy and regain the form he had during his junior season at Stanford when he was one of the most dangerous backs in college football. Love is trying to earn a spot on the depth chart behind Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson.
    Link to story
    Bryce Love player page

Lions | LeSean McCoy sought by Detroit?
Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent RB LeSean McCoy is a sleeper pick free-agent target of the Detroit Lions, according to Chris Burke of The Athletic Thursday, March 5.
Footballguys view: McCoy might be added as a mentor to Kerryon Johnson. While he's not the same player he used to be (and needs to hang onto the rock), McCoy can still work well as veteran depth and a receiver out of the backfield.
    Link to story
    LeSean McCoy player page

Lions | Kenyan Drake an option for Detroit?
Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake is 'one to watch' for the Detroit Lions in free agency, according to Chris Burke of The Athletic Thursday, March 5.
Footballguys view: The Cardinals want to keep Drake but they are going to be held back by David Johnson's big contract. We'll see if they can work something out with Drake or if he hits the open market and potentially land with a team like the Lions.
    Link to story
    Kenyan Drake player page

Jets | NYJ working to keep Robby Anderson
New York Jets impending free-agent WR Robby Anderson remains in the team's offseason plans, as the Jets are making efforts to re-sign him, according to a source Thursday, March 5.
Footballguys view: Anderson is going to make a lot of money if he hits the open market. In fact, he could get a deal near $15 million in annual average salary. We'll see if the Jets get enough of an offer to convince Anderson to stick around.
    Link to story
    Robby Anderson player page

Titans | Ryan Tannehill still in Titans' plans
Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Tannehill, a pending free agent, is still very much in the Titans' re-signing plans, and according to one report out of Boston, the team is using its purported interest in free-agent QB Tom Brady as leverage to lock in Tannehill at a lower cost.
Footballguys view: The first domino has to fall with Tom Brady. If he stays with New England or signs somewhere else other than Tennessee, the Titans will get Tannehill wrapped up. He'll be asked to hand off and play conservative football as the Titans want to run the ball and play great defense to make another playoff run in 2020.
    Link to story
    Tom Brady player page
    Ryan Tannehill player page

NFL | Jonathan Taylor to be overdrafted?
Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor will be overdrafted after his strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, in the opinion of one Pro Football Focus analyst.
Footballguys view: Yeah, that might happen but Taylor should have been graded as a late first-round pick already. We don't think he'll be that overdrafted because his film already gives him a strong grade. Plus, Taylor needs work as a receiver out of the backfield and isn't as complete of a back as someone like J.K. Dobbins.
    Link to story

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to hit market
Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon, a pending free agent, is planning to test the market, per source, according to a report Thursday, March 5.
Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Gordon held out last year to get a new deal but to no avail. He might be best in a RBBC but Gordon can handle a starter's workload and should have more than a few teams interested if the price is right.
    Link to story
    Melvin Gordon III player page

Saints | Drew Brees doubles down on return
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees reiterated Thursday, March 5, that he plans to re-sign with the Saints and added that he plans to finish his career in the Big Easy as well. 'Listen, I have no intention of going anywhere,' Brees said Thursday during a charity event. 'I don't care what the offer would be or what the situation might be, I am Who Dat Nation for life.'
Footballguys view: Brees is not done playing -- yet. He'll be back for the 2020 season and Teddy Bridgewater will move on in free agency. We'll see if Brees gives some snaps away to Taysom Hill as the team tries to get Hill groomed as a potential heir apparent to their future Hall of Fame passer.

Seahawks | Alex Collins remains an option
Free-agent RB Alex Collins (Ravens) is still receiving interest from the Seattle Seahawks, according to sources.

Vikings | Dalvin Cook hopes for big 2020 season
Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook said he hopes to post 2,000 scrimmage yards next season.
Footballguys view: He could certainly do that if he stays healthy. Cook is a favorite of Fantasy GMs and finished as the no.5 fantasy running back in 2019 and had around 1,600 all-purpose yards. He's going to be a first-round pick for Fantasy GMs later this year and is a RB1 with upside.
    Link to story
    Dalvin Cook player page

Titans | Raiders interested in Marcus Mariota
Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota, a pending free agent, is drawing interest from the Las Vegas Raiders, likely to serve as a backup to Derek Carr.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right, but would Mariota want to be a clear backup? Mariota has been a favorite of Raiders general manager Mike Mayock. He's at the point in his career where he will at least have to compete in training camp as no team is going to hand him a starting job. Perhaps a team like the Bears could bring Mariota on board to push their quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Mariota could backup Derek Carr but there's no telling whether or not Carr is even going to be with the team. If they sign Tom Brady, then Carr is clearly gone.

Chargers | Austin Ekeler lands 4-year deal
Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler on Friday, March 6, agreed to a four-year, $24.5 million contract. The deal includes $15 million in guarantees.
Footballguys view: The Chargers are moving on from Melvin Gordon and Ekeler is clearly their top guy. He had nearly 1,000 yards receiving last year on 92 catches. Ekeler is an RB1 for Fantasy GMs and should be a first-round pick later this summer.
    Link to story
    Austin Ekeler player page

Packers | Aaron Rodgers OK with rookie QB
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said Friday, March 6, that he wouldn't mind if the team drafted a quarterback this spring. 'I'm a realist; I know where we're at as an org and I know where I'm at my career,' Rodgers told ESPN Milwaukee. He added that it doesn't matter who comes in, 'I'm confident (he is) not going to beat me out anytime soon' but would like to bring in players who could 'come in and help us right away.'
Footballguys view: The Packers need to be prepared for the future. It makes sense for the team to explore options at the quarterback position to see if they can find a player they like to groom behind Rodgers.
    Link to story
    Aaron Rodgers player page

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes still learning on job
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes says on an upcoming episode of the HBO series The Shop: Uninterrupted, that he didn't truly learn how to read opposing defenses until the second half of the 2019 season.
Footballguys view: That's the scary thing; Mahomes has not yet played his best football. If he continues to grow as a passer then all single-season records are in trouble. Mahomes keeps the Chiefs in a Super Bowl window for the next five years if not more.
    Link to story
    Patrick Mahomes II player page

Cowboys | Amari Cooper seeking to stay
Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper, a pending free agent, reiterated Thursday, March 5, that he is hoping to sign a long-term deal with the team. 'I love being a Dallas Cowboy,' Cooper said Thursday on 105.3 The Fan. 'I think about it almost every day. Just the aura of being a Dallas Cowboy, you can't beat it. I want to be a Dallas Cowboy for life.'
Footballguys view: The Cowboys want Cooper to stay...he wants to stay...yet the two sides have not yet reached an agreement. With free agency rapidly approaching, we should see some movement on any potential deal for Cooper in the near future.
    Link to story
    Amari Cooper player page

Broncos | Devontae Booker to hit open market
Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker, a pending free agent, isn't expected to be re-signed in Denver, per source. He is expected to draw second-wave interest in free agency.
Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Booker is a better-than-you-think receiver but he's not good as a runner. Some team will add him for veteran depth but we've gotten rid of all our Booker stock in deep dynasty formats.
    Link to story
    Devontae Booker player page

Broncos | Theo Riddick now healthy
Denver Broncos RB Theo Riddick, a pending free agent, has been medically cleared after missing the entire 2019 season with a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason. He isn't expected back with the Broncos and will test the market.
Footballguys view: Riddick was running out of gas with the Lions and never got to see the field for the Broncos last year. There may not be much left to his game and he could find difficulty in finding a new team to go to.

I’d say Amari Cooper wanting to stay has a lot to do with McCarthy being there. Honestly, I bet anybody but Garrett and he probably says this but had Garrett been retained...I don’t think he’d want to be a Dallas Cowboy “every day”
