JAX - WR Marqise Lee shows well in 2016

    Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee posted six receptions for a team-high 86 yards on nine targets in the Week 17 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lee was the stuff of fantasy punchlines after rough first two years in the league, but he often outplayed fellow 2014 second rounder Allen Robinson and displayed better chemistry with Blake Bortles despite being less physically talented than Robinson.

IND - RB Frank Gore makes NFL history

    Source: The Associated Press

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore rushed 16 times for 62 yards in the Week 17 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, becoming the fourth player in NFL history to top 1,000 yards at age 33 or older. He is the oldest since former Washington Redskins RB John Riggins achieved the feat in 1984, and first 1,000-yard rusher for the team since RB Joseph Addai in 2007.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore benefited from Andrew Luck being healthy all year. It's hard to see the Colts turning to him as the lead back at 34, but his cost is a reasonable 3.5 million, so he could be a big part of a committee with a free agent or rookie back.

ARI - Good news for RB David Johnson

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (knee) had initial tests on his injured knee Sunday, Jan. 1. The tests revealed meniscus damage, but his anterior cruciate ligament remained intact, according to a source. Johnson will have an MRI for further clarity Monday, Jan. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The good news here is that Johnson won't have to have ACL surgery, which might have endangered his status for Week 1 next year.

TEN - WR Rishard Matthews finishes up strong

    Source: The Associated Press

Tennessee Titans WR Rishard Matthews posted nine receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Houston Texans. He was targeted 13 times.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews finished only 55 yards short of 1000 on a run-first team, which is impressive for a reasonably priced free agent wide receiver. He's earned draftable status for 2017 fantasy drafts.

TEN - RB DeMarco Murray inches to title

    Source: The Associated Press

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray entered Week 17 against the Houston Texans needing just two yards for the most rushing yards in the AFC. He posted 11 runs for just 21 yards, his worst performance of the season, but it was good enough.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray has been playing through an injury and his production slowed a bit at the end of the season. It was still a triumphant campaign in fantasy leagues and the NFL alike for Murray, and he might have earned his 6.25 million dollar salary next year, slowing the arrival of Derrick Henry in dynasty leagues.

OAK - QB Matt McGloin exits with injury

    Source: Raiders.com

Oakland Raiders QB Matt McGloin (shoulder) left the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos due to a shoulder injury. He was taken to the locker room and is questionable to return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders are watching a day that began with them in the running for the #1 seed turn into a day that will send them on the road possibly with a rookie third-string quarterback starting their first playoff game in almost a decade. The good news is that the opponent is also reluctantly starting a poor quarterback and the Raiders could still be favored on the strength of their running game and defensive star Khalil Mack.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta has another strong game

    Source: NFL.com

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta caught 11 passes for 91 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pitta's 2016 was inspiring, as his second hip fracture was supposed to end his career. He is still under contract next year, but could be released as his 5.5 million dollar salary will be hard to justify.

PHI - Doug Pederson to return in 2017

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson will return for the 2017 season, according to a team source. Executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman and vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas will also return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles exceeded expectations considering that they traded their starting quarterback right before the season began, but they faded badly in the second half of the season. They are still in rebuilding mode but at least they replaced the first round pick they traded to Cleveland in the Carson Wentz deal with a pick that will only be a few picks later from Minnesota.

      Tuesday Update

ARI - RB David Johnson escapes with sprained MCL

      Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (knee) has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL and will not require surgery. He will sit out the Pro Bowl but is only expected to need six to eight weeks of rehab.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson avoids a major injury scare here...and fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief. With two months of rest, Johnson should be available for OTAs later in 2017. All signs point to him being his old self with next year kicks off, and that's means he's easily an RB1 and candidate for no.1 overall pick in 2017 fantasy drafts.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson wants to stay

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson said he wants to stay with the Vikings in 2017, but he declined to say whether he would accept a pay cut.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's got a $17 million cap number in 2017, and that means he's not coming back....at least at that price. If the two sides can restructure his deal to a more cap-friendly number then perhaps Peterson would stay with the Vikings.

LA - LA seeks Sean Payton interview

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has received an inquiry for permission to interview him for the Los Angeles Rams' head coaching vacancy.
      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis is reportedly open to trading Payton, but the potential compensation is unknown at this time. Payton wrapped up his third 7-9 season in a row with a loss against the Falcons in Week 17.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray could see more work

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray hasn't been receiving enough work, according to head coach Jack Del Rio.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders have been trying to mix in more of their rookie RBs Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington. In the postseason -- with Connor Cook potentially starting at QB -- the Raiders could get back to basics with Murray as their featured runner.

WAS - Rob Kelley may have surgery

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley (knee) probably will need to undergo arthroscopic surgery this offseason, but head coach Jay Gruden expects Kelley to get stronger and be in better shape.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelley became the lead back for Washington this year, but he really didn't get going until the halfway point of the season. He had three games with 20 or more carries, and he did good work in those contests. If healthy, expect Kelley to be the lead back with a large workload for Washington in 2017.

OAK - Oakland starter unclear at this point

      Source: NFL.com

Oakland Raiders QB Matt McGloin (shoulder) underwent an MRI and is sore, but head coach Jack Del Rio is unsure who will start between McGloin and QB Connor Cook in the wild-car round of the playoffs. 'Between Connor and Matt, we'll see who can get the most reps and who we feel the most comfortable putting in the game,' Del Rio said.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McGloin was banged up against the Broncos and Cook had to take over in Week 17. A fourth-round pick from Michigan State, Cook made at least one good throw but too often he looked short, threw and interception and wasn't as accurate as he needed to be. If Cook starts in the playoffs, he would be the first QB in NFL history to earn his first career start in the postseason.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill needs to practice

      Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill must practice before head coach Adam Gase will consider playing him in the playoffs.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's always been a chance that Tannehill could return for the playoffs, even though it has to be considered a longshot. Tannehill is recovering from a Grade 2 medial collateral ligament sprain. QB Matt Moore has been starting in his place.

SF - San Francisco to talk with Kyle Shanahan

      Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will interview for the San Francisco 49ers head coaching position Friday, Jan. 6, according to a source.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Any of the six teams looking for a head coach should be talking to Shanahan. His dad, Mike Shanahan, worked with the 49ers from 1992-1994 where he won a Super Bowl as their offensive coordinator. Kyle Shanahan is the hottest name in coaching along with Patriots OC Josh McDaniels. If the 49ers hired Kyle, there's a chance a role in the front office could be there for Mike. The Shanahans don't have to be a package deal, but an offer could be extended to both.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise a few weeks away

      Source: NFL.com

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (wrist) may be available to play in a few weeks if the Seahawks are still in the playoffs, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks are pretty decimated at the RB position right now. Prosise's return would boost their offense, primarily in the passing game where the rookie back (and converted wide receiver) can do the most damage.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy has high ankle sprain

      Source: NFL.com - Nick Shook

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) suffered a high ankle sprain during the team's Week 17 game, according to interim head coach Anthony Lynn.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills are done, so McCoy will get to recover during the offseason. In 15 games, McCoy turned in the 3rd-most fantasy points for backs in standard-scoring leagues.

HOU - QB Brock Osweiler expected to start

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler is expected to start against the Oakland Raiders in the wild-card round of the AFC playoffs due to QB Tom Savage (concussion) dealing with a concussion in Week 17, in the opinion of John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Head coach Bill O'Brien will make an official decision on the starting quarterback Tuesday, Jan. 3.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benched just a couple of weeks ago, Osweiler looks like he'll be back in the starting lineup. He'll be tasked with winning a playoff game at home in Wild Card Weekend against the Raiders.

NFL - John Ross declares for draft

      Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

University of Washington WR John Ross will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft, according to a source.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ross is one of four WRs who could go in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Measuring in at 5'11" 190 pounds, Ross draws comparisons to DeSean Jackson (Washington). Like Jackson, Ross has speed to burn and can get on top of a defense in a hurry. Ross had two separate knee injuries in college, so lack of durability is a concern.

ATL - TE Austin Hooper should be on the field

      Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Kelsey Conway

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper (knee) is expected to participate in practice this week, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Falcons want to make a deep postseason run, and if they do it should include Hooper provided he doesn't suffer any setbacks.

Atlanta Falcons WR Taylor Gabriel (foot) is expected to participate in practice this week, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabriel is an electric player and he can make big plays for the Falcons on limited touches.

NYJ - WR Brandon Marshall open to pay cut

Source: New York Daily News - Daniel Popper

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall is set to make $7.5 million next season, but none of that money is guaranteed. The Jets can save the money by cutting Marshall, but the receiver is willing to take a pay cut. 'It's not about the money anymore,' Marshall said. 'It's all about winning.'

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Jets don't have a quarterback to make them a threat to run at the postseason. Perhaps if they make a move for a Tony Romo (or something like that), then we'll change our view about their potential. They're not winning many games if Christian Hackenberg actually gets to step onto the field in 2017.

NYJ - RB Bilal Powell may see bigger role

      Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell may receive a bigger role in 2017 after he played well over the last month of the season, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That would be a good idea for the Jets as Matt Forte is not the same player he used to be. Powell rushed for 411 yards over the last four games of the season, which was third most in the league during that span.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson's health a concern

Source: 106.7 The Fan - Chris Russell

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson's (Achilles') future health is unclear as he continues to be bothered by bot Achilles' tendons, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be, but they can be problematic if not given enough time to heal properly. Doctson is a smooth athlete, but his rookie season was a wash because of these Achilles' problems. We hope he can get healthy and get his career on track. If Doctson is ever healthy, there's Keenan Allen-like upside to his skill set.

BUF - Frank Reich to interview with Bills

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich is expected to interview for the Buffalo Bills' vacant head coaching position, according to sources.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reich was a backup quarterback for the Bills when Jim Kelly was lighting the league on fire. It would be fitting to see him return to Buffalo as the head coach, but right now Reich might be considered a dark horse.

GB - WR Randall Cobb looking more promising
      Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb's (ankle) chances of playing this week are better than they were last week, according to head coach Mike McCarthy and the Packers' medical staff.

We'll know more about Cobb's status later in the week.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles had two separations

      Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (shoulders, wrist) toiled through two shoulder separations and tendinitis in his wrist last season.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bortles was not good this year, but his play can't be totally blamed on these injuries. His mechanics took a big step back in 2016, and he'll need to fix that if he wants to get back on track for 2017. This could be Bortles last chance to prove himself with the Jaguars.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte undergoes knee surgery

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (knee) underwent surgery for a torn meniscus Friday, Dec. 30, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Forte was only able to make it through 14 games this year. In 2016, Forte had a career-low 813 rushing yards and a career-low 30 catches and a career low 263 receiving yards. Needless to say, his first year with the Jets wasn't a banner season.

CHI - WR Kevin White should be ready for offseason

      Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Adam L. Jahns

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (leg) is expected to be ready for the offseason program as he completes his recovery from a spiral fracture of his fibula, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Adam L. Jahns.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft, White has only played in four games over two years in the NFL. In four appearances this year, White was targeted 36 times and hauled in 19 catches for 187 yards. If healthy, he'll compete with Cameron Meredith to be the Bears no.1 WR in 2017.

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ray Fittipaldo

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates drops too many passes even if sunbeams are coming out of his fingertips. He won't be that involved in the Steelers postseason run.

JAX - Mike Smith to interview with Jaguars

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Mike Smith will interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching vacancy.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is a hotter name in these coaching searches than some think. His time as the Falcons head coach ended badly, but he's done a good job getting the Bucs defense on track.

Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin will interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching vacancy Monday, Jan. 2.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Goodwin has been in his current position with the Cardinals since 2013. He's not a playcaller as that's Bruce Arians role with the team, but Goodwin did get a chance to do that for a few games earlier this year in the preseason.

LA - LA seeks to interview Doug Marrone

Jacksonville Jaguars interim coach Doug Marrone is being sought for an interview by the Los Angeles Rams about their head coaching vacancy.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marrone may not be quite as 'Hollywood' as the Rams want, but they are doing their due diligence here. We feel the Rams will make one of the more 'splashy' moves of the several teams in need of a new head coach.

      Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers are headed in a new direction....again. McDaniels is going to be one of the hottest names for teams in search of a new head coach. He may end up in California, but it could be with the Rams instead of the 49ers. McDaniels will have his pick.

      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jaguars need to find a coach that can resuscitate Blake Bortles career. McDaniels has worked well with guys like Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo, but reworking Bortles would be much more of a challenge.

MIN - QB Sam Bradford should start in 2017

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford has earned the right to be the starting quarterback of the Vikings, according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Lord only knows if Teddy Bridgewater is going to ever be the same after suffering a devastating leg injury in camp. Bradford will count $17 million against the cap, so the Vikings should work on extending him to lower that number if at all possible. When Bridgewater is healthy, he should be able to push Bradford for the top job.

OAK - QB Connor Cook prepping to start

Oakland Raiders QB Connor Cook is being groomed to start the wild-card playoff game against the Houston Texans with QB Matt McGloin (shoulder) expected to be out, according to a source.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good luck with that. Cook came in against the Broncos in Week 17, had one good throw and spent the rest of the time looking like a rookie. Against the Texans, it would be shocking to see Cook play at a high level.

HOU - RB Lamar Miller ready for playoffs

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) feels rejuvenated and ready to go against the Oakland Raiders this weekend after sitting out the last two games of the regular season. 'I think [the break] helped me out a lot,' Miller said. 'I feel fresh right now. I feel good. Missing my first two games [of the season], it was kind of tough. It was different for me, but I'm happy I'm back and I'm looking forward to helping this team.'

The Texans are going to need all the help they can get on offense with Brock Osweiler starting at quarterback. If Miller can lead the way against a Connor Cook-led Raiders team, the Texans could advance beyond Wild Card Weekend.

McVay has been the offensive coordinator for Washington since 2014 after getting promoted from their tight ends coach. Washington's offense ranked 3rd in the NFL in total yards per game (404.3) in 2016. Turning 31 years old later this month, McVay is getting interest from at least the Rams and the 49ers so far.

Adam Schefter reported this on Monday. Shanahan is likely the top coaching candidate out there. It would be interesting to see him end up in Denver where his father Mike Shanahan won two Super Bowls.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise could be back next week

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise's (shoulder) scan on his injured shoulder came back positive, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This might be a little sooner than expected. Getting Prosise would help their thin backfield, especially since he's a good receiver out of the backfield. Prosise may be able to return next week if the Seahawks are still alive in the playoffs.

LA - John Fassel interviews for permanent job

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Los Angeles Rams interim head coach John Fassel interviewed for the permanent head coaching job Tuesday, Jan. 3.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After Jeff Fisher was fired, the Rams turned to Fassel as their interim head coach. The Rams did not look inspired with Fassel at the helm and continued to flounder after the switch, only scoring more than 7 points in one of the three games he coached. They went 0-3 with Fassel as interim head coach, and we don't think he's a serious contender for the permanent job.

PIT - TE Ladarius Green might be ready to play

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) is still in the NFL's concussion protocol, but head coach Mike Tomlin said he looks good and that he could play against the Miami Dolphins this weekend.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Green out there would help the Steelers. They are dangerous on offense, and they could be even more dangerous if Green is out there at tight end. His size and athleticism combination makes for a nice mismatch against linebackers or safeties.

BUF - Sean McDermott will interview Wednesday

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will interview with the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, Jan. 4, for their vacant head coaching position.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McDermott has done a good job running the defense in Carolina. They weren't as good defensively in 2016 as they were in 2015, but the Panthers were below average with a secondary full of inexperienced players. They did have the 6th-best rush defense and only averaged 91.3 rushing yards allowed per game this year.

Patricia has been the top defensive coach for the Patriots since 2012. Like all coordinators with Bill Belichick, Patricia is going to get interest from teams in need of some of that Patriots magic. The Rams are also interested in Patricia according to reports.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gailey tried to do his best with the Jets, but things weren't working for the offense this year. We'll always remember him as a versatile and innovative coach who worked well with the talent around him...even if it wasn't the best talent. At 65 years old, Gailey may get some interest from teams in need of offensive help.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson likely done in Washington

            Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson may have 'worn out his welcome' in the nation's capital, according to ESPN's John Keim.

            [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is hitting free agency, and he's likely to move on. We think a reunion with the Eagles could be the best possibility. Any team in need of deep speed at wide receiver should be interested in the veteran. Jackson was targeted 100 times in 2016, finishing with 56 catches for 1,005 yards and four touchdowns.

Garcon is set to hit free agency in 2017, and we don't think a return to Washington is in the cards. For the fourth year in a row, Garcon was targeted more than 100 times (114). He had 79 catches for 1,041 yards and three touchdowns in 2016.

Burton is a dynasty prospect to keep an eye on. Playing behind Zach Ertz won't make him an incredible fantasy asset, but if Ertz goes down with an injury then Burton could certainly be relevant. He finished this year with 37 catches, 327 receiving yards and one touchdown.

So much of the Raiders offense was built on David Carrs ability to make throws that other guys can't. Still Raiders only +3.5 on the road with a 3rd string Q.

SD - QB Philip Rivers under the radar

                Source: NFL.com

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers achieved one of the most underappreciated seasons of the year, throwing for 4,390 yards and 33 touchdowns -- ranked fifth and fourth, respectively, among quarterbacks.

The Chargers didn't make it into the postseason and they fired their head coach Mike McCoy. Rivers was one of the lone bright spots (along with Melvin Gordon) as the offense had to continue working through multiple injuries to key players. McCoy won't be back in 2017, but Rivers will be and there's little sign of him slowing down.

Shanahan's dad, Mike Shanahan, won two Super Bowls with the Broncos in the late 90s. It would make a lot of sense for the Broncos to turn to the younger Shanahan now. He runs an offense with the same verbiage as former head coach Gary Kubiak, and that would save some time for 2016 first-round pick QB Paxton Lynch.

Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub will interview with the Denver Broncos for their vacant head coaching position.

Toub is known as a leader and a true "football guy." He's an outside the box consideration, but Toub has drawn John Harbaugh comparisons from those around him.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson may shed knee brace

                      Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (knee) may shed the knee brace he has worn since suffering a sprained medial collateral ligament in Week 3 for the playoffs. 'I don't know if he's 100 percent,' offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. 'He's probably not running 4.4 like he did when he was coming out of the combine, but obviously he still runs well enough to be able to do the things we need him to do.'

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The way he was running, we forgot he was even wearing one. Wilson has a tremendous matchup, at home (where the Seahawks are nearly always good this year) against a shaky Lions defense. Expect some fireworks this weekend from Wilson and his receivers.

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) will not play in the AFC wild card round of the playoffs, according to a source.

Zero surprise here. The Dolphins are going to try and advance through the playoffs by beating the Steelers with QB Matt Moore on Wild Card Weekend.

DET - RB Zach Zenner endorsed as featured back

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner played 64 of the 66 offensive snaps against the Green Bay Packers in Week 17, and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said Zenner is in 'phenomenal shape' and is open to keeping Zenner in an every-down role moving forward.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zenner is built like a fullback, but he's got the running style of a halfback. The Lions travel to face a tough Seahawks defense in Wild Card Weekend, so having Zenner work as the battering ram makes sense to keep the defense honest.

GB - Giants plan to punish WR Ty Montgomery

                      Source: NJ.com

Green Bay Packers RB/WR Ty Montgomery faces the New York Giants Sunday, Jan 8, and SS Landon Collins said the Giants plan to slow Montgomery be hitting him hard whenever he touches the ball.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Montgomery is built like a running back, so this 'punish him' mantra may not work as intended. At 220 pounds, Montgomery can take a lot more than other wide receivers. We'll see what kind of impact Montgomery can have against a Giants rush defense that has allowed only 70.7 (2nd) rushing yards per game over the last three weeks.

NYJ - Harsh criticism for QB Christian Hackenberg

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg will 'never make it' in the NFL, according to a team source, and another source said Hackenberg couldn't throw the ball into an ocean.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hackenberg is certainly a multi-year project for the Jets. They passed on guys like Paxton Lynch (Broncos) and Dak Prescott (Cowboys) to select Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. We'll see if he can make a massive overhaul on his skill set before the start of 2017 training camp. Let's just say we're not betting on it.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill to serve as backup?

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill will likely serve as the backup running back and goal-line specialist in 2017, according to beat writer Paul Dehner Jr.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a bit too soon to be making that proclamation. The Bengals have Gio Bernard under contract until 2020, and he'll compete with Hill for the most snaps in the Bengals backfield. Bernard is best suited as a part-time player as he's not built to take a starter's workload. We're looking at RBBC all over again for the Bengals in 2017.

Miller is likely to get a huge workload against the Raiders on Saturday. The team needs to limit how much QB Brock Osweiler touches the ball. They don't want the game to come down to Osweiler's performance. Over the last three weeks, the Raiders have allowed 106 yards rushing on average. We'll see if Miller can push the century mark on Wild Card Weekend.

NFL - Joe Mixon declares for draft

Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon has declared for the NFL Draft Thursday, Jan. 5.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The problem for Mixon is his off-field incident from 2014, when he was suspended for the whole season for punching a woman in the face. Mixon has the ability to be a top back in the NFL, but that baggage is a problem. Early word is that several teams have scratched Mixon from their draft boards.

OAK - WR Michael Crabtree also limited

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crabtree and Amari Cooper have their work cut out for them, as they will have to work hard to deal with Connor Cook's accuracy issues. Crabtree had a solid year, but the third-string quarterback (who is a rookie) is going to cap his production this week and we expect the Raiders to win on the ground, if at all.

Cooper will play, although his impact will be limited by Connor Cook. Cooper and Michael Crabtree will have to work extra hard to help Cook cover for some accuracy problems, but if the Raiders are going to win the game, we expect it to be on the back of the ground game, not Cook's arm.

                      Source: Packers.com

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 5.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cobb has been supplanted by rookie Geronimo Allison while he was hurt, and wasn't playing well before the injury. On top of it, it has become clear that with Jordy Nelson back to normal and Davante Adams improved, Aaron Rodgers just doesn't look at Cobb as much. We expect a limited impact if he plays this week, even though he torched New York earlier this season.

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Edward Lee

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said the Ravens hope WR Breshad Perriman can become a No. 1 receiver in the future. Harbaugh said there are signs that Perriman can be a top receiver but he still has work to do before reaching that point.

                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Ravens need a big time receiver to help Joe Flacco out, and if Perriman can be that guy, this is a team which will be in the thick of it next year. Harbaugh loves his upside but admits he is a work in progress. "You see the radius, and you see the speed. Here's a guy that has a chance. Now he's got to refine his route running, he's got to find his hands to catch them and just become a really good all-around receiver. This is his first year of practicing. He didn't even have training camp. So to me, there's a lot of upside there." Now Perriman just has to fulfill that promise.

The Raiders are going to have to get this done on the ground. Neither McGloin or starter Connor Cook have the experience or ability to win this game with their arm and the Texans pass defense is fierce. Unfortunately, they are pretty good on run defense as well. On the plus side, the Raiders face Brock Osweiler. So there is hope.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill has a unique blend of speed and quickness, according to head coach Andy Reid, and Reid compared Hill to Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson.

Jackson is a better receiver than Hill, and certainly more polished as a route-runner. Hill was a converted running back from college, so he's still learning the nuances of the wide receiver position. He's certainly the most exciting player on the Chiefs offense at this time, and his role could continue to grow as his game further develops.

This season, Wright was targeted only 43 times, caught 29 passes for 416 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. We can't imagine the market will be white-hot for his services.

Heated exchanges are going to happen during the course of the game. Things have to already be a little awkward between the two with Osweiler getting benched, then the team having to go back to him for this playoff run.

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is leaning towards choosing the Denver Broncos as his landing spot in becoming a head coach, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. 'The word with people involved in coaching searches and gathering all of this information is that that's the job Shanahan has his eyes on,' Garafolo said Wednesday, Jan. 4. 'Going to Denver where his father (Mike Shanahan) coached.'

Every available head coaching candidate should be leaning towards Denver. They barely missed the playoffs and still have most of their Super Bowl 50 defense intact. A few changes here and there, and the Broncos are right back into the playoff picture...and maybe even the Super Bowl picture. You can't say that about any other team looking for a head coach in 2017.

With a 49-31 record during his time as the Colts head coach, Pagano and GM Ryan Grigson have been in a funk over the last two seasons. They've missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, finishing with an 8-8 record each year. We could see 2017 as the 'last hurrah' for both coach and general manager.

                        Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Xavier Grimble likely will have a bigger role in the passing game if TE Ladarius Green (concussion) is not able to play in the Wild Card playoff game against the Miami Dolphins.

Grimble had a larger role with Green out at the end of the season. The Steelers will spread the field and use multiple assets to attack the Dolphins through the air. Guys like Grimble, Green (if he plays) and Eli Rogers could be in for quality targets on Sunday.

                        Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub interviewed for the Denver Broncos head coaching position Friday, Jan. 6.

Toub is known as a leader of men, a 'true football guy' and some have compared him to John Harbaugh (Ravens). He has worked his way up the coaching ranks to be in this position, and we think Denver or any other team who hires Toub as a head coach would be pleased with that decision.

Miller has been fully participating in practice, and the Texans need him more than ever. With QB Brock Osweiler starting against the Raiders, it would be wise to feature Miller early and often on Saturday.

                        Source: FOXSports.com - Bruce Feldman

Penn State WR Chris Godwin announced he will forego his final season of collegiate eligibility and enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

One of the best pass-catchers in the country, Goodwin has caught 128 passes for 2,083 yards and 16 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Goodwin is not a large receiver, but at 6'1" 208 pounds he plays larger than his size. He lacks blazing speed, but Goodwin is a nuanced route-runner with great body control and strong hands. He should come off the board in the third or fourth round.

                        Source: FOXSports.com - Bruce Feldman

South Florida RB Marlon Mack announced he will skip his final season of collegiate eligibility and enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Mack knows how to eat up chunks of yards. He's had 1,000 yards rushing each of his three seasons with the Bulls. With an aggressive rushing style, Mack can get to top speed in a hurry and push defenders out of the way with a devastating stiff arm. Mack is likely a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor won't be brought back

                        Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor won't have his option exercised by the club, and the team intends to move on from him. The team has until March 11 to exercise his $15.5 million option, which would guarantee him $30.75 million over five seasons. The offense has picked up dramatically since he took over as they were 10th and 11th in scoring the last two years after finishing 26th the year before he took over.

                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. With Rex Ryan fired, the Bills are moving on from his quarterback. Taylor did good things in Buffalo, and he produced with banged up assets around him in the passing game. He's got a big arm, throws a beautiful deep pass and is incredibly athletic. However, pass placement has been an issue with Taylor and he had the 3rd-highest off-target percentage (21.3 percent) of any quarterback in 2016. That being said, Taylor should have a few teams interested in giving him a shot to start.

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron's fifth-year option will likely be picked up, according to beat writer Dave Birkett, and head coach Jim Caldwell said Ebron has performed well and has improved every year.

                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ebron had a career-best season in 2016. His 61 catches and 711 yards were the most he's had as a pro. As the Lions offense evolved without superstar WR Calvin Johnson, Ebron emerged as a reliable target for QB Matthew Stafford. Ebron's role may continue to grow so long as he can stay healthy, as the big tight end has never played a full 16-game season yet.

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian (shoulder) underwent successful shoulder surgery on his left shoulder Thursday, Jan. 5.

                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Siemian's situation as starter is tenuous with his biggest advocate (Gary Kubiak) departing. That said, Paxton Lynch has to show he can carry the load and improve. It all depends on who the coach ends up being, and what they want to do. We suspect GM and Denver Icon John Elway leans towards Lynch, so a new coach would as well. Until they have that guy in place, though, it's a big mystery.

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor could draw interest from the Cleveland Browns if he hits the free agent market, according to beat writer Pat McManamon, because he is good fit for head coach Hue Jackson's run-first offense.

                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills have to decide what to do with Taylor as they owe him $12 million (up from just $2.5) if they hold onto him. They don't seem sure of committing and with his surgery, they may decide to delay as long as possible. Cleveland knows they don't have a long term fix on their team and will kick over every rock in creation to find it.

Smith-Schuster is automatically one of the best WRs in this draft class. We could see him going off the board in the late first round. He's a big (6'2" 220 pounds), physical receiver who can box out smaller defenders. Smith-Schuster does not possess elite speed, but he works hard and can win with size in the red zone.

Redemption is the name of the game for Osweiler...a least a little bit. Benched for Tom Savage, the big-money quarterback played well (for him) against the Raiders and led the Texans to a playoff win at home on Saturday.

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (leg) said he has not started running at this point but expects to be ready for offseason workouts.

White had the makings of a superstar receiver coming out of West Virginia in 2015. His pro career has been derailed by injuries to the same leg. He's had two surgeries on the same leg, and White has played in only four NFL regular season games because of it. Time will tell if White can get healthy -- stay healthy -- and play up to the enormous potential he once had.

Hood changed his mind as late last year he indicated that he would stay in college. His draft stock might have been helped by another year in school, but running backs are like tires -- they only have so much tread. Hood will be entering the NFL off a down season. In 2015, Hood rushed for 1,463 yards and 17 touchdowns in 14 games. In 11 games this year, those numbers dropped to 858 yards and eight touchdowns. He's likely a fifth- or sixth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.
