Minor change in the Arizona rotation.

Diamondbacks optioned RHP Shelby Miller to Triple-A Reno.

Arizona will announce a corresponding roster move on Friday. It's a big admission of defeat for the Diamondbacks, who traded their best prospect Dansby Swanson for Miller this past offseason. Miller has been among the worst starters in baseball this year, losing nine of 14 starts with a miserable 7.14 ERA. The 25-year-old should be back with the D'backs at some point this year but there's no guarantee he'll return to fantasy relevance.

Dbacks better not give up on Miller. So sick of seeing wasted talent out here. Didi Gregorius batting .298 with 11 HR's

Multiple reports last week indicated that the Pirates are shopping left-hander Jon Niese, and and today Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review adds that the Bucs are trying to move Niese and/or fellow lefty Jeff Locke (Twitter link). Trading either struggling southpaw would create a permanent spot in the Pittsburgh rotation for Tyler Glasnow, whose name, as noted by Biertempfel, is not listed among the upcoming probable starters for Pittsburgh’s Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis.
That the Bucs would look to move Locke isn’t exactly a stunner, as the 28-year-old has been on the fringes of the rotation anyhow in recent seasons. Locke found himself in a competition with Vance Worley for a rotation spot in 2015, and, dating back to Opening Day of last season, has pitched to a combined 4.78 ERA in 269 1/3 innings (including a 5.26 mark this season). The 28-year-old is averaging career-lows in K/9 (4.7) and ground-ball rate this season (46.6 percent) and has yielded a troublesome .287/.351/.498 batting line to opposing right-handed hitters this season.
Locke isn’t teeming with upside, but a club that has been beset by injuries in the rotation could certainly do worse than him when filling out the back of the rotation. Locke did, after all, manage a 3.98 ERA in 81 starts from 2013-15, and he’s earning a reasonable $3.025MM salary in 2016. He’s controllable for another pair of seasons beyond the current campaign and doesn’t figure to be in line for a significant bump in salary due to his aforementioned 2016 struggles.
While it’s rare to see a contending club move one or even two arms from its big league rotation — especially when its ace (i.e. Gerrit Cole) is on the disabled list — Pittsburgh has a number of young, MLB-ready arms that could step into the rotation down the stretch. In addition to Glasnow, we’ve seen Jameson Taillon, Steven Brault and Chad Kuhl each make his Major League debut this season. Taillon, of course, is presently on the big league disabled list with some fatigue in his right shoulder and will eventually need to have his innings capped after not pitching in 2014-15 due to injury. However, he could return later this month, and the Bucs are also hoping to get Cole back following the All-Star break as well (he’s already begun a Triple-A rehab assignment). Vogelsong, too, could be back in late July. As such, even without Locke and Niese, Pittsburgh could conceivably have a combination of Cole, Francisco Liriano, Vogelsong, Glasnow, Kuhl, Taillon and Brault make the bulk of their starts in the final two and a half of months of the season.

Not happy but this young pitcher we got sounds promising. ..

I think it came down to Pomeranz having a small sample size of success coupled with the fact he will probably demand big dollars in 2018, assuming his success continues. ..

Pirates pitching has been a mess

they did end up sending Glasnow back down

im ok with them moving Niese or Locke as it is such an extreme sellers market

and they have a handful of mediocre prospects like Duncan, Kuhl, Boscan, Brault ec that can do what his guys did. Hopefully Lirian figures it out and the studs Tallion and Glasnow can contribute

The Padres decided to sell high on Pomeranz I guess. He's only had one half season of great production and they flipped him for an elite prospect. An 18 year old pitching prospect so there's risk on both sides here.

While the Rays are fielding some calls on righty Chris Archer, the kinds of offers coming through the line have been good only for “comedic value,” a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The report certainly suggests that Tampa Bay isn’t interested in the kind of buy-low offers it is apparently receiving. The young righty hasn’t quite been himself this year, but remains quite talented and controlled at a very cheap rate.
                              Here’s more from Rosenthal:
                              • The Yankees are discussing the possibility of trying to extend closer Aroldis Chapman, according to Rosenthal. Talks to this point are just internal and haven’t been raised with Chapman’s representatives, but the club isn’t set on selling off big league assets over the next few weeks. Team president Randy Levine maintained to Rosenthal that the Yankees like their team and won’t make a call on trading away veterans until much closer to the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline.
                              • Carlos Gonzalez is perhaps the best player among current trade candidates, but the Rockies don’t feel the need to get out from underneath his contract in the same manner they did with Troy Tulowitzki, so he’s far from a lock to be moved. CarGo is batting an excellent .318/.367/.557 this season, and it’s interesting to note that over the past 365 days, he’s hitting .304/.354/.592 with a hefty 46 homers in 156 games played. His $17MM salary in 2016 and $20MM salary in 2017 are both reasonable sums for that level of production.
                              • The Rangers were in on Drew Pomeranz before his trade to the Red Sox, and they’re in on Rich Hill now that Pomeranz is off the market. The Rangers could also use an upgrade behind the plate, writes Rosenthal, who notes that Jonathan Lucroy would be preferable to Derek Norris, but the latter of the two is available as well. The Rangers, though, “probably do not view” any of the available trade candidates as worthy players to surrender top-tier young talent like Jurickson Profar or Joey Gallo.
                              • Some within the industry have told Rosenthal that Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale “could be in imminent danger” of losing his job, but D-backs sources denied the notion when asked, he continues. Rosenthal lists Bryan Price and Walt Weiss as skippers that are safe for now but may be seeking new employment come season’s end, and he notes that Robin Ventura, Brad Ausmus, John Farrell and Terry Collins could all be in the same boat if their clubs finish the season poorly.

Is Alex Bregman ready to take off for the Astros?

Top prospect Alex Bregman was the second overall pick of the 2015 draft, but he's already almost ready to join the Houston Astros and follow up on the promise he showed in the 2016 Futures Game.

In the past month, the penny pinching Padres have spent upwards of 60 million on the amateur draft, international prospects and luxury taxes. The farm system is getting strong and thats the only way a small market team can compete with the big boys.

It’s the million dollar question on everyone’s minds: who won’t be in a Cub uniform after the trade deadline?
                                                    • Kris Bryant? He is definitely staying in Chicago.
No way the Cubs would sacrifice their entire future just to bring in a few bullpen pieces. Are you crazy?!
                                                    • Anthony Rizzo? Again, he’s a core member of this team and is off-limits. Nope.
                                                    • Addison Russell? The Cubs already sold off Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees, and at this point the Yankees are one of the only trade partners interesting in working with the Cubs. Since they’ve already traded for Castro, they have little need for Russell.
                                                    • Ben Zobrist? He’s the type of ancillary character that pays dividends when they’re needed most, and the Cubs can ill-afford to sacrifice a player that can generate runs. I doubt he’s on the table.
                                                    • Jason Heyward? If any team can afford $184 million, it’s the Yankees. Do they need him? Doubtful, and while it wouldn’t be the worst trade the Cubs can make, it’s highly unlikely to happen since we’re only in month four of a lengthy contract. His defense makes up for his shakiness at the plate, but I still worry about the $24 million he’s set to make next year.
