The Jets might be staying within the division to find their new head coach.
In a sudden, stunning development Wednesday night, Bills coach Doug Marrone opted out of his contract with Buffalo and became a top target of the Jets. According to multiple sources, there is mutual interest between the Jets and Marrone. The two sides were trying to set up an interview as of Wednesday night.
Marrone, 50, is from The Bronx and spent four seasons as the Jets offensive line coach under Herm
Edwards. The Jets just started their search for a new head coach and general managner, but they can hire Marrone immediately if they choose to. They interviewed assistant head coach/running backs Anthony Lynn on Wednesday, satisfying the Rooney Rule that requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate.
Marrone spent two seasons as the Bills head coach, going 15-17 there. This season the Bills were 9-7, their first winning season since 2004. Before Buffalo, he was the head coach at Syracuse University, where he went 25-25 in four seasons.
The opt out by Marrone was shocking. He had a unique option to opt out over a three-day window that began Monday. The opt-out clause was included in his contract in case there was an ownership change. When Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the franchise in October, it triggered the clause.
“We are disappointed that Coach Marrone will no longer be an important part of our organization,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. “We thank him for all of his hard work and leadership during his tenure and wish him and his family the best with the next chapter in their lives.
“We will now begin the important process of conducting a thorough search for a new head coach as we continue to strive to reach our goal of returning to the playoffs and bringing a championship to Buffalo for our fans.”
A source said Marrone was concerned about possible changes in the Bills organization. It has been rumored Pegula is going to bring in someone to oversee football operations, possibly Bill Polian. Marrone wanted to know if that was true and who the person would be, but Bills ownership would not tell him.
According to ESPN, Marrone will walk away with his 2015 guaranteed base salary of $4 million even if he should take another job.

If Marrone is hired by the Jets, he is expected to have some say into who the team hires to be their general manager. He has ties to two of the candidates the Jets already planned on interviewing. Mike Maccagnan, the current director of scouting for the Texans, was the director of player personnel for the London Monarchs of the old World League and signed Marrone as a player in 1991. Rick Mueller, the Eagles pro personnel director, worked with Marrone with the Saints from 2006-08.
It will be interesting to see how this alters the Jets’ planned search.
A Jets contingent, led by owner Woody Johnson and consultants Ron Wolf and Charley Casserly, is scheduled to fly to Seattle on Friday to interview a trio of Seahawks candidates over two days. They will talk to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, assistant head coach/offensive line Tom Cable for the coaching job and pro personnel director Trent Kirchner for the GM job.
The Jets began the interview process with a couple of in-house candidates Wednesday.
Lynn, who has been the team’s running backs coach for six years under Rex Ryan, interviewed for the head coaching opening. Rod Graves, the director of football administration under John Idzik, got his shot at the GM job.
Both candidates are seen as long shots to get the jobs as the Jets clearly want to reboot the entire football operation.
One candidate turned them down on Wednesday. Vikings assistant GM George Paton passed on the chance to interview. He also turned down the Bears. Paton has turned down multiple requests over the years, including the Jets in 2013. A source who knows Paton said he is very content in Minnesota and it is not a reflection on the Jets.Comment -

#52Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, and Josh McDaniels. Lump 'em together and toss 'em out with the garbage. People think they're something special because of their Patriots success. Like him or not, it's all about BB. The guy simply wins. He went 11-5 with Cassell at the helm and everyone gunning for 'em. He won with mediocre assistants. He wins with receivers and rbs off the waiver wire. McDaniels had his HC shot with Denver and damn near ruined the franchise. My opinion is he's the weakest link on this year's Pats team and his pathetic play calling is the biggest obstacle between NE and another Super Bowl title (well, the Seahawks are a pretty big obstacle too.)Comment -
