Purdue is not good this year. They only beat Western Illinios by 10 and Ball State by 11. Toledo is better then both of these teams and Toledo will give Purdue all it can handle Saturday.
Purdue's offense has struggled mightily even with the poor competition they have faced. They are ranked 80th in passing yards with under 22 per game, they are ranked 87th overall in points scored. Remember that is with them playing 2 very bad teams already this year, even with that the Boilermakers numbers on offense are horrid.
Purdue QB Robert Marve is expected to start this weekend against the Rockets. Marve will be coming into this one off an injury and with very bad season stats to this points. Marve has been intercepted at least once in every game so far this season.
I think the Rockets defense will have no problem shutting down this Boilermakers offense, just as its 3 previous opponents did. The Rockets did give up 41 points in a season opening loss against Arizona, but I dont think that should be held against them too much. The following week Arizona scored 52 points, and then scored 34 against then #9 Iowa.
Toledo comes in with a 2 game winning streak having beaten Ohio University and
Western Michigan. While neither of those look like huge wins, both those teams are decent and the Rockets handled them easily winning by a combined 20 points.
I think one big advantage that the Rockets will have is at the QB position. The Rockets QB Austin Dantin is very 2 dimensional and I expect that will give teh Boilermakers fits on Saturday. So far this season, Dantin has completed 37 of 56 pass attempts which is 66.1%. But the best thing about Dantin is that he doesnt rely on passing the ball. He has rushed the ball 37 times this year, has 2 rushing touchdowns, and has had 10+ yard rushes in every game this season, even against Arizona.
The Boilermakers have rushed the ball with some good success at times this year. Dierking and QB Henry are both averaging over 5 yards a carry and the Rockets are certainly going to have to find an answer for that. However, it remains to be seen whether either of these two will be able to reproduce these numbers against stronger competition. Dierking has never rushed for this many yards over a total season and is barely averaging 3 yards during his career at Purdue. Qb Henry likely wont see much action Saturday.
So really I think the Rockets will hold Dierking in check and by controlling the offensive line, which I think they will the Rockets will hold him to under 3 yards average. If they can do this, I believe the Rockets can not only cober this game, but win it as I feel the Boilermakers passing game is highly suspect and with Marve coming back off an injury we dont even know if he will be 100%.
I just hope he is healthy enough to keep making like Brett Farve and throwing the ball to the wrong team. Marve had 13 INT's against 9 TD's in his last season with Purdue ( 2008). Marve has also thrown INT's in every game this year and I hope that streak continues Saturday.
So Purdue is brining in a QB who was injured and didnt play last year, who was injured last week but is coming back Saturday, who throws INT's like Brett Farve, and they are laying 11 1/2.
I love the chances with TOLEDO + 11 1/2 here.
Good Luck Saturday
