Ha! Just saw this thread, IMG. I was down on BYU fairly early, for many of the reasons you mentioned, but namely, the fact that they already played each other with BYU clearly outplaying UCLA and committing too many mistakes, resulting in a deceiving outcome. BYU should take this one pretty handily (and I even like it at -6).

UCLA quarterback Olson doubtful after aggravating left knee injury
By Brian Dohn brian.dohn@dailynews.com Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 12/18/2007 10:41:35 PM PST
LAS VEGAS - The coach changed, but UCLA's injury woes continue.
Starting quarterback Ben Olson is doubtful to play in Saturday's Las Vegas Bowl against BYU after aggravating a left knee injury in practice. It leaves Osaar Rasshan as the possible starter.
"We'll see where we're at (later this week) and go from there," Olson said. "You never want to go out there if you're not able to perform to the standards you need to be able to. It's not in the best interest of the team. It's been sore since a while ago."
Olson missed seven weeks when he tore the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee Oct.6 against Notre Dame.
Exploratory surgery showed no cartilage damage, but he was out until Nov. 24, when he played in the second half of a win against Oregon.
Olson played the final seven minutes a week later against USC, but acknowledged last week his injured knee would take another week or so to heal.
He aggravated the injury in practice earlier this week, and did not participate in Tuesday's walkthrough on campus before the team departed for its bowl game.
"I think a lot of it is I haven't gotten a lot of the reps I did (the last few days) for a number of months, and it's just been pretty sore," Olson said. "I don't know if it's ever been able to heal, because as soon as I was able to jog and that kind of stuff, I've been trying to play. It's giving me some problems right now." Olson said he was examined by the school doctors after Sunday's practice, and was told there was scar tissue that needed to break apart. His backup, Patrick Cowan, has already been ruled out by interim coach DeWayne Walker because of a knee injury.
If Olson cannot play, Rasshan would make his third career start. He is 17 of 44 for 259 yards. He was pulled from his last outing, the victory against Oregon, after going 0 for 7 in the first half.Comment -

#47Another update:
"During Wednesday's practice in Las Vegas, Osaar Rasshan went down with an injury and was on the ground for a little while, Brian Dohn reports. Trainers checked his left leg, and he left practice for a little bit but came back because it was just a cramp. Since Ben Olson (knee) isn't expected to play and Patrick Cowan has long been ruled out for the game, walkon McLeod Bethel-Thompson is scheduled to be the backup. He threw four interceptions and fumbled twice when he replaced the injured Olson in the Notre Dame game."Comment -

#48i'll throw this in here. short, but info is info
BYU -6 vs UCLA : O/U 47
BYU (10-2)
mountain west conference
sos: 104
8-4 ats
UCLA (6-6)
pac-10
sos: 20
6-5-1 ats
These two teams met earlier this year when the bruins got the best of the cougars, 27-17. statistcally, however, byu dominated the game putting up 200 more yards in total offense, they just were not able to overcome the first quarter pic-6 thrown by Hall. since that week 2 matchup these two teams have gone in very different directions; ucla has lost 4 of its last 5 while byu has won 9 in a row.
BYU:
The cougars come into the game with the 13th ranked passing attack in the nation and the #59th ranked rushing offense in college football. Max hall has over 3600 passing yards on the season and they'll lean heavily on him in their matchup with UCLA. On the ground, harvey Unga is their big play guy averaging over 5 yards a carry to go with his 13 Tds. overall this offense ranks 42nd in scoring.
On defense the cougars are stingy against the run ranking 9th in the nation and only allowing 2.89 ypc. in week two ucla struggled to run against the byu front 7 and i expect the same to be true when they play again later this month. where you can hurt the blue and white is through the air where they rank 41rst against the pass and allow over 58% completion percentage to the opposition.
UCLA:
The bruins come into this game as a pretty hurtin group right now, its pretty obvious that if dennis dixon didnt get hurt, this team wouldnt even be bowl eligible. The bruins loan win, over their last 6 games, is a win over Oregon who was playing without their star Qb. This team is just not playing well.
on offense UCLA ranks 99th in the nation. if you're gonna beat the cougars you need to be able to pass, but ucla has had their problems through the air in 2007. Ben Olson came to ucla has the big time 5 star Qb recruit, but hes been pitiful. UCLA has had 4 players get some legit time at QB and, as a team, they have more INTs than TDs. Thats not something you're likely to find on many bowl teams. on the outside cowan has some size at 6-4, and breazell is a decent play maker, but these arent guys you'll be watching on sundays. on the ground the bruins arent a lot better. this is a team that ranks 62 in the nation in rushing offense which puts them in the bottom half of the country. granted, they're coming off a game vs the best rushing defense in the nation, but things shouldnt be a whole lot easier in las vegas. ucla couldnt run on byu in week 2 and i dont think thats going to change here.
defense is what got ucla into a bowl game. granted oregon didnt have dixon, but shutting out a team like oregon is still a solid effort. this defensive front ranks 25, only giving up 3.12 ypc. Brian price has been a big surprise at DT for the bruins this year and was selected to the big-10 all freshman for his efforts this season. now, if byu isnt able to run, they should certainly be able to pass; ucla ranks 71rst in passing defense allowing over 234 yards per game through the air. This isnt likely to be a great matchup for a pass defense that has been picked apart for 21 tds. they'll put some pressure on the qb with bruce davis (9.5 sacks) but the secondary just hasnt been able to keep from allowing the big plays. if there is one good thing ucla has done this season, its get off the field on 3rd down. this team ranks 3rd in the country in 3rd down conversion defense. unfortunately for them, byu is in the top 20 in picking up the first in 3rd down situations....the cougars just seem to make plays when they need them.
UCLA is still in need of a coach and some direction. i think they'll play hard but fall short on the 22nd of december.

#63Man, sorry to hear about this game. To be honest, I didn't watch any of it and only read the recap and based on that it seems like BYU backers have a legitimate gripe with the BYU play calling. I heard about that TD at the end of the 1H and how BYU turned it over on its own10 yd line with like .20 seconds left. Bad play calling by BYU. When you have an 11 pt lead and are the superior team and you have a team with no offense you have to kneel that ball. Only bad things can happen with such little time left and being very far away from the goal line.
Considering I lost my big bet with Michigan not too long ago, I am hardly in a position to criticize or say I told you so nor do I feel justified to do so. To make matters worse, I didn't even bet UCLA despite my hunch. So I certainly did not cash in on this one.
The one thing I will say is that I think you did the right thing. You felt confident about a play and felt you had an edge and you went in strong. You got a good number and all the information seemed to support your analysis. Any time you feel you have an edge you have to step up. It's a shame a coaching blunder (especially by what I consider a very good young coach in Mendenhall) cost you a big victory.
Good luck the rest of the way IMGV....Comment -
