Fellas, I follow App State closely living here in NC. I have several friends who are grads from there and fanatics. They always throw it in all of our faces that with the Carolina Panthers, Duke, Tar Heels, NC State, ECU, etc. that App State year in and year out is the ONLY real chance at ever providing any kind of football championship to the state of NC. That has proved all too true so many times. Basketball is a different story in NC of course...
Anyhow, I know that Montana is undefeated, and that App State has 2 losses, etc. but Montana has really not played the level of competition that App State has in my eyes. App State's 1st loss, and 1st game of the year, was against ECU (who just won the Conference USA title against Houston). It was a great game with App coming back from being down, and keeping it close until the end with a 29-24 loss. They then lost the following week to an okay McNeese State team 40-35, but they were gassed and primed for a let down after the heartbreaking loss to their in-state big brother ECU.
After that, App went on a tear and took care of the scrappy teams in the Southern Conference that are always gunning for them, since they are the team to beat every year. Teams like Wofford, Georgia Southern, Furman, Elon, and Western Carolina are unknown to most of you guys and not even on the map nationally but they are all old school southern football teams (a few being decades old NC & SC rivals of App of course) that get up for them every game, and usually give App a fight. App blew through all of them with only Wofford and Western Carolina giving them the most competion with 10 and 5 point losses respectively. Wofford, by the way, is where the owner of the Carolina Panthers, Jerry Richardson, played in college before he went on to play with Johny Unitas as a wide receiver, where they won an NFL Championship together in the '50's. He took the few thousand dollars he won from that game and invested in what would become Hardees restaurants, and that is how he made his millions. He was able to use his old NFL connections, and those millions, to get the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, NC in 1995. Wofford is the home of Carolina Panthers training camp every year too, and they have NFL caliber facilities provided by Richardson as a gift to his alma mater (and to support Panthers training camp there every August of course.) And Western Carolina is where Brad Hoover, the Panthers starting fullback, went to college. He is a hero there, and all these old crusty Southern Conference football fanatics and Western Carolina alums love that he is playing for NC's NFL team.
Anyhow, the point to all of this rambling and useless information is that the Southern Conference, although a Division I-AA conference, is an old school football conference at its heart, with a rich history and deep football traditions. App State in the Southern Conference is the Division I-AA equivalent of Florida or Alabama in the SEC. Montana is about to run into a well coached jugernaut, and they are in for a fight. Their undefeated record, App's two losses, and the fact that their undefeated record is giving them the home field advantage, is providing us with line value from the oddsmakers.
I fully expect App State to win this game outright fellas, but just like any playoff game anything can happen, so I am taking the points and field goal protection as insurance. If you are tailing me, or undecided and just looking for action, then I hope that this information is helpful, and that my analysis is right on the money.
Good luck today with whatever you are on. I hope that we all make money and cash.
And, Go APP STATE +3.5!!!
